In total, the MainCampus has five representatives, theQwaqwa Campus four and Vista threerepresentatives. Tello was the first President of the Central SRC.From these twelve members a CSRCpresident will be chosen on a quarterlybasis to represent the general studentbody at meetings of the ExecutiveManagement, Senate and Council.The historic official inauguration ofthe first CSRC took place in earlyAugust. Mr Tello Motloung, SRCPresident of the Qwaqwa Campus, waselected the first CSRC President.New SRC constitution formain campusIn the wake of calls by some student formations,the Council approved anamendment to the SRC constitution forthe Main Campus to allow for the introductionof proportional representationalongside a first-past-the-post electoralsystem.The new Main Campus SRC constitutionwas the result of consensusreached during a lengthy negotiationprocess involving diverse student formationssuch as Sasco, the ANC YouthLeague, the Young Communist League,the ACDP, Here XVII, KovsieAlliance, aswell as the democratically elected SRCmembers of the Main Campus. Independentexperts facilitated the negotiationprocess. This constituted a legitimatebasis for the democratic participation ofall students on the Main Campus in thegovernance of the university.In terms of the amendments to theMain Campus SRC constitution, nine ofthe 18 SRC members will be elected bymeans of proportional representation,and nine on the basis of a direct, firstpast-the-postelection.The following portfolios of the maincampus SRC have since been contestedby individual candidates on the basis of“first past the post”: president, secretary,academic affairs, legal and constitutionalaffairs, student development, arts andculture, men’s internal liaison, ladies’internal liaison, media, marketing andliaison. The other nine portfolios werecontested by affiliated organisations on aproportional representation basis. Theseare the two vice-presidents, treasurer,dialogue and associations, transformation,campus affairs and recreation,sport, international affairs, and communityservice.62
