A clearer Africanorientation became evident in research,academic programmes and conferencepapers, amongst o<strong>the</strong>rs.The <strong>of</strong>ficial opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> multidisciplinaryCentre for Plant Health Management(CePHMa) in October 2005positioned <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Natural andAgricultural Sciences as a leader in <strong>the</strong>field <strong>of</strong> crop development in Africa.CePHMa is <strong>the</strong> only centre <strong>of</strong> its kind on<strong>the</strong> continent and was established toextend <strong>the</strong> expertise in plant health managementin South Africa and in Africa, totrain experts in plant health and to conductmultidisciplinary research about<strong>the</strong> health <strong>of</strong> agricultural crops.A growingSouth Africanand Africanorientation isevident inresearch andteaching.11
