IPfocusIT Integration - The ChallengeIn this two part article, the guys from Codestuffexplain what is involved in real-life integrationprojects and how to deal with the unexpected.Deploying, integrating and configuring an IP based VMS(Video Management System) is seldom a turnkey event.Even a relatively small installation can require carefulpreparation. There are many pitfalls that can trap theunwary, not least of which is managing userexpectations. The site could involve an existingnetwork and equipment, including DVRs, analogue CCTVcameras, monitors and a matrix. A customer may bereluctant to give up on their earlier investment andthere may even be an existing VMS in place with whichthe customer and key staff are familiar. So when deploying a new system it is important toidentify and manage some key stages on the way toachieving a successful installation. These include:PlanningTrainingPreparationDeploymentMaintenanceThough many of these steps are ultimatelyindependent of the actual VMS – the choice of VMS canprove a help or could be a hindrance through theprocess.PlanningA careful assessment of the existing infrastructure isrequired – both in terms of network and existing videoequipment. On the network side you need to look atthe existing usage, and topology. Video over acorporate network where it is competing for a limitedcommon resource can lead to a very difficultdiscussion with the customer. Video is a greatconsumer of network bandwidth but due to the natureof the streaming protocols typically used will tend togive way to other services that move data around thenetwork. For example, a nightly backup could severelyimpact the quality of video delivery as large quantitiesof data are moved around at a specific time.A general corporate network may also be installed withfeatures that would seem very sensible in a normalcorporate scenario – but not for a 24/7 video recordingsystem. There have been some examples of networkequipment powering down at weekends or overnight asan energy saving measure. Some parts of a network may be particularly remote,or allow for limited connectivity. Whether for legacy orfor logistical reasons the choice of VMS can help out inthese cases. If multicast is supported on the networkthen this can be a sensible choice for streaming fromvideo devices on these poorly served nodes. Anotherfeature of some VMSs is to allow a proxy to take thesingle stream and make this available to other parts of6_issue 30the LAN or across a wider network. Products fromOmniscient, Milestone and Codestuff support thiscapability. Another existing resource may be computerequipment. Some suppliers will supply hardware to runthe VMS server and NVR components as part of apackage. This can simplify the configuration andmaintenance – but does put restrictions on customerchoice, and can add significantly to the up front costs.Software only suppliers have a more difficult jobputting constraints on the system, and in addition toproviding adequate training, often provide tools to helpmanage the variables in software only systems. One of the components that can be difficult to manageand plan for successfully is the NVR. The variables thatmust be considered include average bit rate from thecameras, the available storage (and type e.g. RAID, NAS,SAN) and the total data throughput on the providedhardware. In a software only solution the provision ofaccurate end system specifications is important – butin all cases the question “how many streams will itrecord?” is painfully difficult to answer. Video sourcescome in all shapes and sizes, with different codecs, different resolutions and varying data rates thatdepend on what is happening. VMS suppliers can helpby providing guidelines. There is certainly scope toautomate and simplify the process, taking some of themagic out. Part of this could include providingappropriate system alarms, for example on storagespace running low or data throughput approaching themaximum possible on the available hardware (anddisallowing one too many playback sessions).A common means of interfacing with legacy CCTVequipment is to add encoders and decoders. If a sitealready contains some DVRs, these may offer somelevel of network connectivity and avoid the need foradditional encoders. However, the network interface ofsome DVRs can be of secondary importance and poorlydesigned – and the frame rate and quality of olderDVRs may not meet the specifications for the newersystem. There are VMSs that do specialise ininterfacing with DVRs, and give the option of installingnewer more capable DVRs in place of encoders andNVRs. Offerings from CBC (VSoIP) and Norbain(Graphica/Graphica 2) fall into this category. In somecases this can lead to a simpler, more cost effectivesolution. However, there can be performancelimitations associated with even the newer DVRs, andthey do not address the emerging megapixel market.Megapixel is often sold on the basis of fewer camerasto cover the same area. While the merits of this can bedebated, VMSs can offer some helpful features fordealing with megapixel data streams e.g .virtualcameras and digital PTZ.A further consideration to make when planning for anew system is the availability of an automationinterface or API (Application Programming Interface). Ifthere is existing software, or if the integrator iswanting to put together a package that includesinteraction with other components e.g. access control,an easy to use and flexible API can simplify the effortin integrating the final system. As an example theQuorum Server and NVR include Web Services APIs tosimplify integration with other systems.TrainingOn all but the most basic installation some form oftraining is invaluable. It is an opportunity to get buy-into the new system. Most VMSs allow for multiple levelsof users e.g. administrator, managers/supervisors andthe operator. These users all require very differentlevels of training. The most critical training is of the administrator. Thecomplexities involved in this role can approach therequirements of a general IT administrator. Much as wewould expect IT administrators to take on appropriatetraining to properly use the tools available and managethe corporate network – it pays for VMS providers tomake available training and documentation in theadministration aspects of their system.A VMS that clearly separates and provides interfacesthat are tailored for the roles can help. For example, forthe administrator the system overview andconfiguration is key, whereas the end user will requirea very different kind of interface. As an example, in theQuorum VMS the Quorum Site application is providedto manage the complexities related to setting up thesystem, while the Quorum Pro viewing application isdedicated to the requirements of the end user.Training can also help in a very real way to reduce thecosts of on-going support for the newly installedsystems. With adequate training the end user may bemore capable at dealing with post installation issuesbefore picking up the phone to call in support. The more successful VMS vendors, including Milestoneand Mobotix, make significant investment in the area oftraining, and certification and put significantrequirements on their resellers to ensure that they canprovide sufficient front-line support.Continued IPfocus August 2011

IPfocusIntelligence and high-definitionsafeguard the World ExpoHikvision creates a high-level securitysolution for China PavilionWorld Expo Shanghai, another global event held inChina following the Beijing Olympics, was a sixmonthtrade fair which attracted over 73 millionvisitors from May to October. As one of the corepavilions in the expo, management at the ChinaPavilion looked for a compreahensive securitysolution, featuring high-definition (HD) imagequality and intelligent video involving analytics.Hikvision, the leading supplier of digital videosurveillance products, created a comprehensiveintelligent video surveillance system includinghybrid DVRs with video analytics features, HDcameras and speed domes as well as videomanagement software to safeguard the ChinaPavilion.ChallengesThe China Pavilion security team wanted to preventillegal intrusions. They requested an intelligentperimeter monitoring solution with PTZ cameraswhich can effectively detect and track intruderswho enter restricted areas. The solution allows theclient to detect unusual behaviour/events and alsoanalyze them retrospectively.Camera status checks include loss of video input, cable disconnection, damage to cameras or shifting, precautions that contribute to ensuring continuousmonitoring of the China Pavilion and surroundingareas.Video preview and playback, storage, logmanagement, PTZ control and e-map functionalitywere also required in this video surveillance system.Video Analytics and RetrievalDue to the large scale of the China Pavilion, thesecurity team set up more than 100 videosurveillance points to cover all areas. Among these, numerous hybrid DVRs with video analysisalgorithms have been deployed for motion trackingand object classification. The hybrids DVRs feature intelligent behavioralanalysis for event detection, with scenariosincluding object entry and exit, appearance, loitering and suspicious objects. Alert areas andtime specifications can be designated as well.Hikvision videomanagementsoftware was alsodeployed in thissystem. Thesoftware supportsa variety of videoinputs as well asoffering reliablestorage andemergency responses. The software runs on adedicated server to oversee analytics and eventtriggeredalarms. Once an alarm is triggered, highdefinitionsnapshots of intrusion events can beproduced by the HD cameras, and an alarm logincluding time and location of the event, is updated.Users can click onto events in the alarm log to viewrelated footage. All events are logged for easyreview, with multiple download formats for databackup.Post-event analysis can be conducted as well.Should an unusual event such as loitering, objectleft behind, graffiti spraying and illegal parking takeplace, the related video footage can be retrievedalong with the time and date of the event forreference. Users can also define different periods oftime to retrieve video footage as required.Wide Coverage with Specific DetailsIn wide area surveillance, it is difficult for camerasto acquire both wide view images and specifictarget object details at the same time. This projecthad to balance these two to identify people andobjects. Hikvision achieved this balance by usingthe leader-follower solution with HD cameras andspeed domes in the perimeters of China Pavilion.Hikvision set up a fixed camera as the “lead” unitfor monitoring large areas, accompanied by a highspeedPTZ dome as a subsidiary “follower”. If the“lead” camera detected events such as loitering orentry into designated zones, the video feed wouldbe automatically transferred to the hybrid DVR foranalysis and the alarm would be triggered. The DVRwould lock the objects and send an order to drivethe subsidiary PTZ dome to track and zoom in fordetails. This solution can help management acquirewide coverage without losing the image detailswhich can be crucial for police officers to use asleads in investigation.Additionally, most standard definition camerasrecord at resolution of CIF or 4CIF which goes up to704x576. However, this is not always enough tomonitor large areas. In order to acquire high imagequality, Hikvision HD cameras were deployed in thesystem for wide-range monitoring. With resolutionof 1.4-megapixel (1360x1024), image clarity and videoquality were enhanced, improvements whichenabled the hybrid DVRs to conduct behavioranalysis more accurately.Achieving High Security LevelsWith products ranging from HD cameras, HD PTZdomes, hybrid DVRs and intelligent videosurveillance analysis servers, Hikvision establisheda rigorous and comprehensive video surveillancesolution to secure the China Pavilion. Given theprestigious nature of the location this became anotable project with some of the highest securitylevels currently used in China or worldwide.“Hikvision’s intelligent, high-definition solution notonly improved security levels at the China Pavilion, but also allow improved visitor experiences at theWorld Expo,” said Polo Cai, Vice President ofHikvision.30_issue 30

IPfocusOn-the-RecordOn-the-Record; Craig Evans,Managing Director, SureViewSystems International LtdThe latest in the series of interviews with those influencing thefuture of security and surveillance technology. IPfocus quizzes thosein the know and gains an insight into opinions that will be shapingthe industry in the future.Q. What is the history of SureView Systems over the past years and what has beenthe main drivers that have influenced the direction and ethos of the company?A. Established in 2003, Sureview was amongst the first to recognise the need for aconsolidated video based platform at monitoring stations. Although our Immixsoftware has been through several iterations over the years, we have alwaysspecifically targeted stations that require an audited, scalable and efficientmeans of handling IP video or text based alerts on sites with the freedom ofchoice of the hardware deployed.Sureview have focussed on having the widest integration library in theindustry, with support for over 250 different devices and systems across arange of security equipment such as Video, Analytics, Audio, Access Control,Fire and Intruder Alarms and GPS tracking. We have a diverse customer base across the UK, Europe, North America andAfrica and listen to our customers to add features or device support that willenhance our overall system. We also work in very close partnership with thehardware manufacturers to ensure that the latest devices and systems areincorporated into the Immix software platformQ. In what way has the acceptance of IP networked security technology enabledSureView to develop as a business?A. The availability and low cost of broadband IP networks has been critical in thedevelopment and expansion of our business. In 2003 when we started, we werea little ahead of our time and often found it difficult to persuade stations of thebenefits of moving away from ISDN and closed systems. However, with the highquality of the IP circuits available now, we find ourselves in a very strongposition of having a mature and proven product in an emerging market. Wealso have many years of experience that we use to help our customers developand grow their business as new IP products and services become available.Q. Do you find that there is still a reluctance to embracing IP within the Securitysector and is this mirrored by our IT colleagues?A. In recent years, we have found this reluctance fading away, replaced byenthusiasm of the potential that an IP system can provide both in terms of costsavings and added value to the customer. The main concern from the ITdepartment is often around bandwidth requirements. However, since Immix isan event driven system and does not stream video 24/7, we see many stationswork on a low cost 2Mbps link. This certainly addresses many of theinfrastructure and cost concerns of our IT colleagues.Q. What have been the major milestones in the development of the IMMIXproduct?A. One of our major milestones was opening our US office in 2005. This hasalso brought us exposure to a wider range of systems and customers thatwould not have been possible from the UK alone. We now have 50customers across the whole of North America, including many of thelargest stations, and have developed real traction there with morecustomers being installed every month. In 2008, we were the first (and sofar only) video based system to be awarded the coveted UL classificationfor our Immix central station platform. This classification certifies thesystem as being resilient and reliable enough to handle life critical eventsand is an important accreditation to have for the US and Internationalmarket.Q. How do you see the Monitoring and Command and Control arenadeveloping over the coming months and years?A. There is now a greater demand from the site owner to view, review andcontrol their site from home or via a mobile device. This becomes all themore important as the rapid growth in the range and variety of servicesbeing offered by the monitoring service accelerates. We also see the move from a server architecture to a cloud based systemas a very important factor in the near future. IT departments areshrinking and data centres are moving from the control room as theentire business model moves to a virtualised environment.Q. With things moving to a cloud or virtualised platform over time, whatimpact do you believe this will have on the traditional Alarm receivingcentres?A. Most large alarm monitoring centres are moving now to cloud andvirtualised models as a means of lowing costs, increasing availability andto enable them to provide more flexible services. As such, we aredelighted to announce our ‘Immix Cloud’ product. The ‘Immix Cloud’system enables monitoring stations and command centres to deliver thenext generation of monitoring services with a fully browser basedoperator front end and dedicated mobile apps for customers.Q. How do you see Monitoring centres developing a customer base, is thissomething that integrators and installers should look to as a value addedservice?A. I believe that the progressive integrators and installers are already doingthis. The potential to up-sell services over and above regular out of hours32_issue 30

IPfocusNew Technology, Security ApplicationOptimization of Wi-Fi networks with Increased Capacity DemandsEkahau Inc., the worldwide leader in highperformance Wi-Fi-based Real Time LocationSystems (RTLS) and Wi-Fi tools, released twoproducts – Ekahau Site Survey (ESS) version 5.5,and Ekahau DBx Pro Spectrum Analyzer – that helpnetwork administrators design, deploy andtroubleshoot high-capacity Wi-Fi networks.Unlike other Wi-Fi (WLAN) planning andadministration tools, the latest version of ESS takesthe capacity of the Wi-Fi network fully intoconsideration. ESS accurately analyzes the networkcapacity based on the number of Wi-Fi devices, andthe applications run on them. This is essential fortoday’s networks where a growing number of Wi-Fienabledsmartphones, laptops and tablet devicesrequire ever-increasing network capacity. When designing a Wi-Fi network for data, voice, orRTLS, to support a large number of wirelessdevices, ESS will suggest a more dense access pointplacement. When analyzing a network, ESS now willdisplay areas of sufficient or insufficient capacity.ESS also provides in-depth troubleshootinganalysis, showing the number of associated clientsper access point and displaying areas where toomany voice calls will be placed simultaneously via asingle access point.“In the era of smartphones and tablets, the questionfor Wi-Fi network administrators is not just aboutcoverage anymore, it’s about capacity,” said JussiKiviniemi, director of Product Marketing at Ekahau.“With our latest version of ESS, networkadministrators can be sure that their Wi-Fi network iscapable of handling current and future capacitydemands. This addition expands the growing list ofESS’ unique features, which already include real-timelocation system (RTLS) integration, hybrid site surveysand an Android network analysis application.”The new Ekahau DBx Pro Spectrum Analyzer allowsthe user to detect, identify and locate interferenceissues in Wi-Fi networks with ease. DBx Pro, whichreplaces the previous DBx Spectrum Analyzer, offers significant improvements, such asinterference classification, a device finder and aredesigned user interface.Where to Find More...The team behind the popular and hugely successful IPUserGroup has announced the launch of the RFiDUserGroup, an RFiD Technology Forum devisedspecifically for Security and Safety Professionals.
