Dear friends,
At Pella Regional Health Center, our first priority is
to provide the absolute best care possible for our
patients. Our patients are friends and family. They
are neighbors we’ve known for years or the person
who just moved in down the block. We feel like we
know you and this knowledge only increases our
desire to provide you with outstanding care.
You’ve probably seen or read about the challenges
facing healthcare today. Those challenges
are huge. Increasing governmental regulation,
decreasing Medicare reimbursements, diminishing
payments from insurance companies are all part
of our environment. But these are challenges we
at Pella Regional are determined to overcome
as we continue to find ways to provide the
outstanding care that is our mission.
I can look at the past year and point to many
areas where we have met the challenge and
found ways to succeed! For example, in 2011,
more babies were born at Pella Regional than in
any other year. We welcomed 377 babies into our
labor and delivery suites where families can stay
together from admission through discharge from
the hospital.
Our surgical department continues to grow. At
Pella Regional, we saw and increase of 19 percent
in the number of surgical procedures performed
here in 2011 compared to 2010. With the
additional of our da Vinci robotic surgical system
and an increasing number of surgeons using our
surgical rooms, we are able to provide many of
the procedures patients need right here – close to
home.
We constantly strive to stay current in our
technologies. In medical imaging, information
services, the lab and surgery, we are finding the
investments made in technology continue to help
us provide you with the outstanding care you
need.
It’s true. We are facing many challenges. But we
are determined to continue to find ways to provide
the best services, the best doctors, nurses and
therapists, the best care… for you. Thank you for
your faith in Pella Regional Health Center. We look
forward to serving you for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Bob Kroese, CEO
A Family Affair: Babies at Pella Regional
It was a family reunion at Pella Regional Health
Center’s obstetrics department in April. Within
24 hours, Dr. Galyn Vande Zande rejoiced as first
his son and his wife, and then his daughter and
her husband, delivered two grandchildren at Pella
Regional. Galyn and his wife Lori, son Eric and
his wife Angela, and daughter Allie Thomas and
her husband Alex, welcomed Ryer Timothy Vande
Zande and Lark Lillian Thomas on April 12 and
April 13.
Being born at Pella Regional continued a tradition
for Eric. He was born here in 1982. Now four of
his five children have also been born here. Ryer
joined siblings Wayne David (age 2), Jenna Lauren
(age 4), Gerrit Wilbur (age 5) and Bridget Dawn
(age 7).
“It’s been good here,” said Eric. “I’ve known Dr.
John [Kanis] all my life. He’s a family friend, and
it’s just great when you know your doctor well
enough to get a hug from him when your baby is
born!”
Eric and Angela have lived most of their married
life in Pella. They remember their children’s births
and realized that they’ve even had the same
nurses for some of their deliveries.
Karen Westercamp, director of labor, delivery,
recovery and post-partum care, said that OB
nurses frequently help with the delivery of
siblings.
“Five of our nurses have worked her for more
than 32 years,” said Westercamp. “We’ve even
had the opportunity to deliver the grandbabies on
occasion! The level of experience is impressive
and very reassuring to the families as their
children are delivered.”
Allie and Alex Thomas both grew up in Pella. After
graduation from Pella Christian High School, they
attended Dordt College. Moving back to this area
of the state was important, and they were happy
to find jobs in nearby Newton.
“Even though we were 30 minutes away, it was
important to us to come back to Pella to have our
first baby,” said Allie. “Dr. John [Kanis] has been
my doctor since I was two. And coming here made
it so easy for our families to stop in and visit.”
For Dr. Galyn Vande Zande, the OB is like his
second office. While he remembers years where
he delivered 80-90 babies in a year, he has
reduced his deliveries to only about 40 year. But
each and every one is very special.
“After every delivery, I take dad on a baby tour,”
said Dr. Vande Zande. “I touch their head, look
in the mouth, count their fingers and toes, and
in general give these beautiful babies the Good
Housekeeping seal of approval – all in front of
dad. An exciting moment for both of us.”
But for his grandchildren, Dr. Vande Zande only
participated as Grandpa.
“It’s different being Grandpa than it is being in
control of a delivery,” said Dr. Vande Zande. “It’s
more nerve wracking and yet exciting at the same
time. I’m very thankful to see a healthy baby and
mommy!”
A Good
Night’s Sleep
“My wife told me I snored terrible bad,” smiles Ed
Van Kooten of Sully. “Not anymore!”
For Ed and his wife, there was an even greater
concern than snoring. She was also concerned
about pauses in his breathing as he slept. Over
the years, Ed had become more restless in his
sleep, and frequently woke up four or five times
during the night. He decided to talk with his family
physician at his annual exam. Dr. Ron Childerston
recommended a Sleep Test at Pella Regional in
our newly expanded Sleep Lab.
“I came in for the test, and Abby Sink, the sleep
technologist, hooked me up to a bunch of wires,”
said Ed. “I couldn’t sleep worth a darn. But she
came in at midnight and said she could see that
I needed a CPAP machine. Finally at 3 am, I fell
asleep. I slept like a baby! She had to wake me in
the morning!”
A CPAP machine provides continuous positive
airway pressure for patients allowing free flowing
air into passages. Many patients diagnosed with
sleep problems use this machine on a nightly
basis.

‘‘
“It’s just kind of a miracle thing for me,” said Ed.
“When I go to bed now, I feel relief because I
know I’m going to wake up in the morning.”
Dr. Jason Wittmer, medical director of Pella
Regional’s Sleep Lab, diagnosed Ed with sleep
apnea, a life-threatening sleep disorder, in
January. Sleep apnea is characterized by pauses
in breathing that prevent air from flowing into or
out of a sleeping person’s airways. The breathing
pauses reduce blood oxygen levels, can strain the
heart and cardiovascular system and increase the
risk of cardiovascular disease. But the good news
is that sleep apnea can be treated. In Ed’s case,
the primary treatment was the addition of a CPAP
machine to aid air flow while he sleeps.
– Ed Van Kooten
“Dr. Wittmer had me explaining what my nights
were like,” said Ed. “He told me I needed a CPAP
machine, and that I’d find out how different my sleep
could be. He was right!”
It’s estimated that over 18 million Americans suffer
from sleep apnea, and 10 million American remain
undiagnosed. Yet a simple night’s sleep in a sleep
lab can quickly provide the data needed for accurate
diagnosis and life-changing treatment.
For Ed’s wife, the difference is amazing. She said
that Ed is sleeping and much more relaxed at night.
There’s no storing, and the restless jerking of covers
does not happen anymore.
“It’s just kind of a miracle thing for me,” said Ed.
“When I go to bed now, I feel relief because I know
I’m going to wake up in the morning.”
First in Iowa with Single Site
Robotic Gallbladder Surgery
Pella Regional Health Center has joined the
ranks of major medical centers offering single
site robotic surgery this year. Until March, Pella
was the only hospital in Iowa with this latest
technological breakthrough with general surgeon,
Matt Morgan, D.O., one of fewer than 20 general
surgeons in the nation trained in this area.
“I view robotic surgery techniques as the best
opportunity to get patients feeling better and back
to work more quickly,” said Dr. Morgan.
In the past thirty years, there has been a
revolution in surgical techniques, beginning
with the introduction of laparoscopy. For certain
procedures, surgeons no longer create a large
incision during surgery. Using small cameras and
extended tools, surgeons could work through very
small cuts to remove gallbladders or appendixes,
fix hernias and more. For patients, laparoscopy
was an amazing advance. The weeks or months
of recovery time from large incisions was reduced
to only days. The disadvantages of this procedure
involved limited instrumentation and difficulty
in accessing certain internal areas. In addition,
surgeons experienced significant strain when
performing multiple surgeries throughout the day.
The introduction of robotic surgery in recent years
changed surgery again. Robotic surgery combines
the benefits of laparoscopy that patients
experienced with significant benefits to surgeons
as well. Surgeons are able to operate robotically
with better precision, dexterity and control. In
addition, surgeons experience significantly less
strain doing multiple procedures daily. The latest
addition is single site robotic surgery. This means
there is only ONE incision, one place, usually at
the belly button, where surgeons are entering the
abdomen.
“This type of technology is the future of
health care,” said Bob Kroese, chief executive
officer at Pella Regional. “We have made
tremendous strides at Pella Regional with robotic
surgery. Since adding the robot in 2010, both
gynecological and urologic surgeons have used
this state-of-the-art technology in the operating
room. Over the past year, Dr. Morgan added
general surgery, and completed training and
performed the first single site robotic surgery in
Iowa.”
Feeling Good Again
For years, Sue Van Vark of Pella has dealt with
acid reflux. There have been treatments, including
a Toupet Fundoplication, or partial wrap of the
stomach around the esophagus, at Pella Regional
Health Center.
“I’d check with him annually,” said Sue. “We’d
talk about my back pain, but one Sunday night, I
dropped to my knees with such pain. My husband
rushed me to the hospital. After four days, on
morphine, the pain lessened, and I went home.”
The doctors ran a number of tests during her stay,
including a gall bladder check, but the greatest
concern was for her acid reflux, and possibly
needing additional surgery to help correct the
problem. The on-call doctors at Pella Regional
prepared to send Sue to Iowa City for a surgical
consultation. But Sue decided to check in with Dr.
Morgan one more time.
“Dr. Morgan said the gallbladder tests in the
hospital were a little off,” said Sue. “It was
possible this horrible pain was just my gallbladder.
He offered me the choice of trying removing the
gallbladder before going to this intense surgery for
my acid reflux. I said, ‘Let’s try it.’”
Dr. Morgan scheduled Sue for the new single-site
robotic gallbladder surgery. Dr. Morgan was the
first surgeon in Iowa to be trained and performing
this procedure, and one of only 20 nationwide
qualified to do this. For Sue, the results were
spectacular.
“I had the surgery on Wednesday,” said Sue. “On
Friday, four of my grandchildren, including 10-weekold
Fisher, came for the weekend. And really I
could have gone to work on Thursday, but I had to
run errands to get ready for the grandkids!”
The following week, Sue was already back on the
golf course on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“After the surgery, I felt good!” said Sue. “And I’ve
had no pain since. No pack pain, no burning, and
no doubling over. The greatest compliment I can
give to Dr. Morgan is that he listens. He looks a
patient right in the eye, and really listens.”
New Beginnings
Barb Braafhart started at Pella Regional as a
student nurse in December, 1968 for $2 an hour.
Since then, Barb Braafhart, RN, has worked in
or managed nearly every department at Pella
Regional.
Six years ago, Barb Braafhart was asked to
take on a new challenge. The need for ongoing
financial support was identified. With cuts to
insurance reimbursements, looming federal
healthcare reform, and the rising cost of care,
financial support of our not-for-profit hospital was
more vital than ever. Barb accepted the challenge
to create and grow the Pella Regional Health
Center Foundation. Over the past six years, over
$3 million has been given to the Foundation!
Barb looks back at her career at Pella Regional
and appreciates the constant challenges she has
faced in her ever-evolving roles.
“I never dreamed this is what I would do in my
career,” said Barb. “I’ve always had an opportunity
to do different things and I’ve really thrived on
that.”
At the end of May, Barb will be retiring from Pella
Regional leaving behind a legacy of caring and
dedication at Pella Regional Health Center.
Giving through time,
Giving in memory…
When Mary Glendening retired from teaching in
2006, she quickly found another job to keep her
busy – Pella Regional Health Center volunteer
extraordinare!
Mary first began at the information desk. It wasn’t
long until she was asked to join the Pella Regional
Auxiliary Board. Additional duties soon included
working at the Koffetijde Kart in the lobby and
knitting charming hats for newborn babies.
“I like the contact with people at Pella Regional,”
said Mary. “I can’t tell you how many times I hear
patients say that they haven’t been anywhere as
nice as Pella, and they so appreciate the help that
we provide in getting them to the right door and
the right office.”
Volunteers are in the hospital every day of the
week. In an average week, over 228 volunteer
hours are donated by caring individuals at the
hospital information desk, Gifts on Jefferson, the
clinics, surgery department, Hospice of Pella, long
term care department, Hilltop Manor, and in many
other areas.

“There are so many dedicated individuals who
care and want to help,” said Beth Loux, volunteer
coordinator at Hospice of Pella. “There are
services we wouldn’t be able to offer without the
volunteer support. We are so grateful for all they
do for us.”
For the Glendenings, volunteering was the first
gift. With the building project underway in 2008,
Mary and Rich honored her father’s memory
through a gift to capital campaign. Henry Roorda,
a lifetime Pella resident, saw the hospital built,
and the facility held many memories for him.
Supporting the hospital both financially and
through Mary’s volunteer work is important to both
of the Glendenings.
“If I needed hospital care, this is the place I’d
want to go,” said Mary. “I volunteer and give to
ensure the continued outstanding care that Pella
Regional provides.”
Quality
Pella Regional: A Level III Trauma Care Facility
The Emergency Department at successfully
completed the categorization and re-verification
process to be re-certified for three years as a
Level III trauma care facility.
Iowa’s trauma system is designed to assure that
all people throughout the state have access to
an organized delivery system for trauma care and
that critically injured patients are rapidly stabilized
and provided with the appropriate resources
necessary to care for their injuries.
Exceeding the Standards
Quality patient care is a hallmark of Pella
Regional. Each year, data is collected and
reported to examine how Pella Regional compares
to other hospitals in Iowa. Results show that Pella
Regional continues to exceed the standards of the
state of Iowa.
Medication errors or adverse drug events (ADE)
are a serious public health condition that can
often be avoided. Pella Regional has less than
half the number of ADEs at 2.43 ADE per 10,000
doses compared to the state average of 5.25.
Pain management is critical to a positive patient
experience. Patients in pain do not move as much
and participate less in their care due to their pain.
This can lead to pneumonia, longer hospital stays,
and added expenses. According to quality data,
patients report that pain is managed 72 percent
of the time at Pella Regional, compared to 71
percent statewide.
Surgical site infections are not only financially
costly to patients and hospitals, but are physically
costly to patients. Incurring an infection from
surgery can lead to prolonged healing, frustration,
and additional visits to your physician. Reviewing
hysterectomy procedures shows that only 1.43
percent of patients incurred a surgical site
infection at Pella Regional, compared to 1.53
percent in Iowa overall.
Pneumonia is serious condition that has been
shown to have better outcomes when managed
with a specific set of orders. Completing a
vaccination of patients can reduce the occurrence
of pneumonia. Pella Regional is successful in
administering the vaccine 99 percent of the time,
compared to the state average of 94 percent.
Additional data on quality measures at Pella
Regional Health Center is available online at
Service
Serving our Patients
