The Hebrew equivalent to ecclesia is qahal and like ecclesia refers to a gathering(Clowney 1988:140). Except in the OT it refers to the gathering of God’s people, thatis the people of God who gathered to make covenant with God and the further atlater times gathered as God’s Covenant People.Whether Jesus had the gathering of Greek citizens in mind, or was creating aparallel with the gathering of God’s Covenant People is not clear.
