GAUGE<br />

18 sts and 32 rows = 4” in Garter St; 16 sts and 28 rows = 4” in Seed st. Take<br />

time to save time, check your gauge.<br />

PATTERN STITCHES<br />

Garter Stitch (Gtr St)<br />

Knit all sts, every row.<br />

Seed Stitch (even number of sts)<br />

Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * across.<br />

Row 2: *P1, k1; rep from * across.<br />

Repeat rows 1 and 2 for Seed st.<br />

Backward Loop Cast-on Method: *Wrap yarn around left thumb from front to<br />

back and secure in palm with other fingers. Insert needle upwards through<br />

strand on thumb. Slip loop from thumb onto RH needle, pulling yarn to<br />

tighten. Rep from * for desired number of sts.<br />

Pick up and knit: Insert RH needle into fabric, wrap yarn around needle and<br />

pull through.<br />

I-Cord: Using 2 dpns, *knit 1 row; without turning the work, slide the sts to RH<br />

end of needle, pull yarn tightly from the end of the row (behind the sts); rep<br />

from * until cord is desired length.<br />

NOTE<br />

Scarf begins with a strip of Gtr St patches; sts are then picked up along long<br />

side of strip to work striped Seed st section with ruffle; sts are then picked up<br />

along short edges of piece to work striped triangles on one end and zigzag<br />

stripes on the other end. I-Cord fringe is added to zigzag edge to BO sts and<br />

pom poms are added last.<br />

SCARF<br />

Section 1 – Square Patches<br />

With C, CO 15 sts. Knit 29 rows.<br />

*Change to next color, knit 29 rows; rep from * using the colors in sequence:<br />

F, B, E, A, G, D, E, F, C, B, G, D, A. BO all sts.<br />

Section 2 – Seed Stitch Stripe & Ruffle<br />

With D, pick up and knit 204 sts along one long edge of Section 1 (one st<br />

between each set of Gtr St ridges). Work 2 rows in Seed st.<br />

Work 3-row stripes in Seed st as follows: C, B, E, B, F, G, F.<br />

Ruffled edge:<br />

Change to A and knit two rows.<br />

Increase Row: K1-f/b in every st across – 408 sts.<br />

[Purl one row, knit one row] twice.<br />

Loosely BO all sts knitwise.<br />

Section 3 – Large Triangle<br />

With D and RS facing, pick up and knit 32 sts across end of Sections 1 and 2<br />

(not including the ruffled edge worked in A). Knit 1 row.<br />

Change to G (do not cut D):<br />

Dec Row: ssk, knit to end of row – 1 st dec’d.<br />

Rep Dec Row every row and work 2-row stripes in G and D, alternating colors<br />

and carrying unused color up side of work, until 2 sts rem. K2tog and fasten off.<br />

Small Triangle 1: With E and RS facing, CO 16 sts, pick up and knit 1 st at point<br />

of large triangle and place removable marker on st, pick up and knit 16 sts<br />

down side of large triangle – 33 sts.<br />

Row 1: Knit.<br />

Row 2: Ssk, knit to 1 st before center st, sk2p, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog – 4 sts dec’d.<br />

Change to B. Repeat rows 1 and 2, alternating E and B, until 5 sts rem.<br />

Row 3: With B, k1, sk2p, k1 – 3 sts.<br />

Row 4: Sk2p – 1 st. Fasten off.<br />

Small Triangle 2: With F and RS facing, pick up and knit 6 sts up side of large<br />

triangle, pick up and knit 1 st at point of large triangle and place removable<br />

marker on st, then use the Backward Loop method to CO 16 sts – 33 sts.<br />

Work as for Small Triangle 1, alternating between E and F and using E for Rows<br />

3 and 4.<br />

Section 4 – Zig Zag End and I-Cord Fringe<br />

With C and RS facing, pick up and knit 32 sts across other end of Sections 1<br />

and 2 (not including the ruffeld edge worked in A).<br />

Shape scarf edges:<br />

**Rows 1 and 2: Knit.<br />

Rows 3 – 8: K1-f/b, knit to end – 1 st inc’d.<br />

Rows 9 and 10: Knit.<br />

Rows 11–16: Ssk, k to end – 1 st dec’d.<br />

Rep from ** in each color using the following sequence: F, B, A, G.<br />

Change to A and knit 2 rows, increasing 1 st on last row – 33 sts.<br />

In A, *with dpn, work I-Cord on first three sts for 6 “. Fasten off. Attach yarn to<br />

first live st at end of scarf and rep from * across row until no sts rem (11 I-Cord<br />

fringes). Use yarn needle to hide yarn ends in the I-Cord.<br />

FINISHING<br />

Weave in ends and block. With leftover yarns, make 7 small pom poms and<br />

attach evenly spaced around edges of Section 3 as shown.<br />
