3rd interviewing workshopSuccessful organizations make use <strong>of</strong> careful screening processes whilehiring potential employees to ensure that they get the best people. There isa strong need for preparing our graduates for the <strong>of</strong>ten grueling recruitmentprocesses <strong>of</strong> the corporate <strong>and</strong> industrial sector. The Office <strong>of</strong> ParticipantsAffairs (OPA) organized the 3rd workshop <strong>of</strong> this semester titled“3rd Winning Interviewing Workshop” on October 29, 2009. Fourteenstudents representing different disciplines participated in the workshop.Faisal Sarfraz, Manager Career Development <strong>and</strong> Placement, was themaster trainer. He covered a wide range <strong>of</strong> topics including tips for writinga good resume, setting goals, dressing for success, do's <strong>and</strong> don'ts <strong>of</strong>interview, answering 20 commonly anticipated questions, reasons <strong>of</strong>failure in interview, etc. The workshop went a long way in boosting theconfidence <strong>of</strong> the participants regarding the interview process.Faisal Sarfraz conducting the workshop on interviewing skills'Sketching <strong>and</strong> Design Course'certificate distribution ceremonyThe certificate distribution ceremony <strong>of</strong> 'Sketching <strong>and</strong> design course'<strong>of</strong>fered by the School <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Advancement (SPA) was held onOctober 20, 2009 in the <strong>UMT</strong> boardroom. The participants <strong>of</strong> the coursewere welcomed by Dr Kamran Siddiqui, Director SPA.Dr Sarwar Azhar, Dean School <strong>of</strong> Business <strong>and</strong> Economics (SBE), wasthe chief guest for the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, he emphasizedthe need for appreciating art in our society.Dr Sarwar <strong>and</strong> Dr Kamran also recognized the efforts made by the courseteacher Ms Alvina Fatima for bringing out the best in her students. The topic under discussion was “Reading habits <strong>and</strong>role <strong>of</strong> libraries”. The talk show also featured two other experts on thesubject Pr<strong>of</strong> Dr Mumtaz Ali Anwar, HEC Foreign Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> the Punjab <strong>and</strong> Salma Awan, author <strong>and</strong> educationist. The programwas hosted by Saeed Wasiq.OPA organizes4th mock interview sessionThe Office <strong>of</strong> Participants Affairs (OPA) organized the 4th mock interviewsession on October 22, 2009. Habib Khan, HRD Manager, MakroPakistan, Ahmad Bilal, Chief Manager HR, Highnoon Laboratories, <strong>and</strong>Muneeb Anjum, Head HR/<strong>Admin</strong>, were invited from the corporatesector to analyze <strong>and</strong> review the abilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>UMT</strong> graduates for future jobinterviews through a mock session. Rana Iftikhar Ahmad, DirectorParticipant Services, <strong>and</strong> Ch Faisal Sarfraz, Manager Career <strong>and</strong> Placementat <strong>UMT</strong>, were also part <strong>of</strong> the panel that conducted the interviews.The expert panel conducting the interviewEight <strong>UMT</strong> graduates faced the expert panel. The individual interviewslasted around 20 to 25 minutes. Each interviewer prepared a review sheetfor the individual c<strong>and</strong>idates.All the c<strong>and</strong>idates were given a briefing by members <strong>of</strong> the interviewpanel about their performance. Their weak areas were pointed out <strong>and</strong>suggestions for improvement were also given.All c<strong>and</strong>idates were provided videos <strong>of</strong> their interview sessions <strong>and</strong> wereasked to fill review sheets as neutral observers. Individual review sheetsprepared by the panel were also given to the c<strong>and</strong>idates.At the end, Dr A Rashid Kausar, Pro-Rector <strong>UMT</strong> <strong>and</strong> Dr SarwarAzhar, Dean SBE, joined the session. They appreciated the efforts <strong>of</strong> theOPA Team for organizing such career development activities that lead topr<strong>of</strong>essional grooming <strong>of</strong> <strong>UMT</strong> graduates. Dr Rashid Kausar presentedsouvenirs to the guest members <strong>of</strong> the expert panel. He also asked HeadOPA to engage more corporate personnel in such activities.Page 11
