from the EDITORBen BriggsDear Members,The busy Fall season is apparent in the many photos you’ll see in this issue. It’s the best time of year forPorsche tours.Regarding the newsletter, new deadline changes are in the discussion stage. It seems some of ourmembers in certain areas of the state are not receiving their Heat Exchangers in a timely fashion. Wemail the newsletter at a “bulk” rate, which is slightly slower than first class mail – but shouldn’t be as slowas we’ve been experiencing. The post office is in the final stages of automating their mailing process, and as you can guess, it’s chaotic. Closing down the new processing center here in Charlottesville asa cost-savings factor has not helped move business mail either. More on that later as we attempt toaccommodate our publishing dates to delivery dates.Have a wonderful holiday season,BenSHENANDOAH REGION OFFICERSPRESIDENTBill SandersCharlottesville, VA434.249.3359billsanderscpa@aol.comVICE PRESIDENTSherry WestfallNorth Garden, VA434.293.6776vscapes@cstone.netSECRETARYPam EbingerVesuvius, VA540.377.5544ebinger08@live.comTREASURERBob DuntleyGoochland, VArduntley@comcast.netDRIVER EDUCATION ChairRick EbingerVesuvius, VA540.377.5544fle@rica.netSAFETY ChairErik BoodyStaunton, VA540.885.8504erik73T@gmail.comSOCIAL ChairSherry WestfallNorth Garden, VA434.293.6776vscapes@cstone.netMEMBERSHIP ChairRhonda DunbrackCell: 540.271.1436Home: 540.289.9399rmgdunbrack@aol.comRPM (Richmond Porsche Meet)Alex SmithRichmond, VA804.741.9704asmith@collegiate-va.orgWEBMASTERJim CondonNorth Garden, VA434.293.6776jcondon@nrao.eduPAST PRESIDENTHerb DistefanoBumpass, VA804.448.3448herbd911@comcast.netZONE 2 REPRESENTATIVETom Zaffaranotzaffarano@gmail.comHEAT EXCHANGER 12.20104

from the PRESIDENTThe Fall Foliage Tour was sensational! Weldon andPhyllis Scrogham opened the doors to their new G &W Motorwerks location in downtown Waynesboro and letus hang out, ooh and aah over coffee and snacks as wetried to figure out which car we each wanted to own. Philand Susie Audibert figured out a great way to get fromWaynesboro to Wintergreen. We even got an police escortout of Waynesboro through the 4 stoplights! Sherry Wesfallhad to figure out how to get the 107+ participants to therestaurant that could only seat 45 at a time. She solvedthat dilemma with two separate run groups, about an hourapart. The weather was sensational, as was the food andbeverage. This was an all-time turnout, with even a couplefrom Potomac joining us. Many thanks to all who helpedmake this a great event. The final Porsche’s & Pastrami was held on Nov. 7th. Againwe had great weather and a lot of cars. Over 50 peopleshowed up for food and good conversation and the parkinglot was filled with everything Porsche, from a 356 Speedsterto a Cayman, plus everything in between. The driving tourto Barboursville Winery had 19 cars and 27 participants takepart in a private winery tour and wine tasting. We may justdo that again!Election results have come in. Officers for the coming twoyearterm will be Sherry Westfall as President, Andy Turneras Vice-President, Pam Ebinger as Secretary and Bob Duntleyas Treasurer. I believe the new and continuing officers aremore than capable in making our region the best it can be.I have thoroughly enjoyed my two-year term as yourpresident and the two years before that as vice-president.I’ve been in a member since July 2003, shortly before Ibought the 928 GTS. I realized then as now, the activitieswe enjoy as members are based on the hard work of theBill Sandersclub officers, the chair persons, volunteers and the activeparticipation of our members. I will continue to be activein Shenandoah Region activities. I thank you for the trustplaced in me.Sherry, Jim and I spent Saturday, Nov. 6th in Ranson, WVat the Zone 2 President’s Meeting. The ten Zone 2 regionpresidents, plus an assortment of vice-presidents and otherofficers or chair persons met with Tom Zaffarano, our Zone 2Representative to discuss ongoing Zone 2 business, namelythe Club Race and DE. Manny Alban and Vu Nguyen joinedus in the morning to update us on upcoming PCA Nationalactivities and events. National is in the process of buyinga flex-space building in Columbia, MD and moving earlynext year. There was discussion of a Tech-Tactics session inEaston, PA, to be sponsored by PCNA and limited to 120participants each of two days. National is I looking into anonline Goodie Store for PCA merchandise, including thosewith PORSCHE logo’s and scripts. They will also look intooffering online stores for the regions, given that CharltonCommerce ceased hosing many regions’ online storesin November. There was also discussion of an onlinecommunity (like Facebook) going live in the next month orso. Baltimore, MD is hosting an American Le Mans Series(and IndyCar) race Sept. 2-4 (Labor Day weekend). Severalof the Zone 2 regions are very excited about this and thepossibility exists of a PorschePlatz type event, includingspecial parking and laps around the downtown road course.Stay tuned for more info. And finally, Parade 2011 will beheld in Savannah Georgia July 31st to August 6th. It will behot and humid, but should be a wonderful place for Parade.www.foreignaffairs.us108 Kerry Lane, Staunton, VA 244015

Biggest and Best Fall Foliage Tour Yet!by Harry Kennisoncrisp Fall Halloween day greeted the over 100 folksA who turned out at Weldon and Phyllis Scrogham’s G &W Motorwerkes in Waynesboro for the start of this year’sfabulous Fall Foliage Tour. The Fall Foliage Tour, which is thebrainchild of Phil and Susie Audibert, has become a lookedforward-tostaple on the Shenandoah PCA annual calendar.2010 proved to be the biggest Tour yet with over 50 gleamingPorsches shinning like diamonds under a bright blue sky inthe parking lot next door to G & W’s stellar new facility.Photos by Harry KennisonClub members were treated to a tasty continental breakfastcourtesy of the Scroghams’, not to mention a visual feastof classic Porsches of all shapes and sizes. Unless you’reheaded for Stuttgart and the Porsche Museum, you’d be hardpressed to find another collection of Porsches to rival this onein Waynesboro. From the sinister looking black mid-enginedFor those of us who followed Porsche’s racing exploits in the 70’s thewhite, red and blue livery of the Brumos Carrera RSR’s was a familiarsight in victory lane racking up wins at the Daytona 24-Hours as wellas the Watkins Glen Six-hour international endurance races.“Got Lights?” Turns out this stunning orange 1972 rally car is theprototype for the much-heralded 1973 Carrera RS.Weldon “Von Trapp” Scrogham (left) and Fall Foliage Tour organizer,Phil Audibert (far right) listen as outgoing Shenandoah president,Bill Sanders, delivers the election results to members as part of the“business” portion of this year’s Tour.Seven Porsches wind their way along the Blue Ridge Parkway enroute to the Devil’s Backbone Brewery.A worm’s eye view of 1980 Porsche Indy challenger that never got thechance to prove it’s worth as the rules-makers, under pressure fromnone other than A. J. Foyt, lowered the Porsche’s turbo boost to thepoint where it was no longer competitive forcing Porsche to withdraw.continued on pg 15HEAT EXCHANGER 12.20108

UPCOMING EVENTS & EVENT REVIEWS continued from pg 7At the appointed hour, President Bill Sanders held a driver’smeeting to review the tour route before us; but now that wasin need of serious revisions due to an inconvenient collisionand ensuing fire on an I-64 bridge East of C’ville along ourroute plan. After the alternate route was addressed, the27 assembled members sprinted to their 18 Porsches andproceeded to follow Bill on twisting and turning roads throughAlbemarle and Orange Counties. We traveled through somemajestic and well manicured white-fenced estates and finelykept farms that were dotted with horses and cattle. The only “downer” encountered on our drive was becomingtrapped behind an out-of-state driver; timid behind the wheelin his 1992 “something” station wagon. At one stop, enteringthe Gordonsville roundabout, some of us thought that thefellow had fallen asleep, but did awaken to see the train offine automobiles with their headlights on, which were lined upbehind him farther than his feeble eyes could see. With this human obstacle now off onto another road toconfound other motorists, our humming herd of Porscheslaunched on our final lap to our destination, The BarboursvilleVineyards. There we had a tour of their operations followed by a privatewine tasting, which was the original excuse for this drive in thebeginning. Our guide for the tour and the wine tasting, was aman named Bill (he offered no last name, so presumably didnot have one). But Bill was no fool either. Bill was extremelyknowledgeable, not only regarding the operations (this winerystarted there in 1976, comprising 128 acres of vineyards, now producing 40,000 cases of mind enhancing beverageper year); but also his knowledge of wine history through thecenturies, deep technical wine chemistry, along with agingtechniques and the blending of both the grape varieties andthe fermented fluids certainly enlightened all of us.The Barbour Estate also includes the original home of VirginiaGovernor James Barbour (1812-1814), US Senator, Secretaryof War, and Ambassador to Great Britain. Also included on these grounds is a second and later Barbourhome designed by Thomas Jefferson. It was one of only fivehomes that Jefferson designed for other than family members. This mansion was destroyed in an 1884 Christmas fire andall that remains standing now are the thick brick walls. TheBarbours then moved back into their original home, neverrebuilding the Jefferson mansion. What a day! What a drive! What a tour! Thanks Bill for planningand guiding us safely. For those of you who are new to the club or have never takenone of these Sunday drives, this experience is better than anyride on the county fair midway!HEAT EXCHANGER MARTFor Sale: Set of 4 alloy Cup 16" wheels from a 94 Porsche 968 with Dunlop 245X45X16 tires(good condition) and 205X55X16 Riken Raptor tires. $950. Biggest and Best Fall Foliage Tour Yet! continued from pg 8V-10 Carrera GT to the fabled but never raced 1980 Indy car;from the seasonally-correct Halloween black & orange GT3 RSto a 1973 Brumos RSR race car (see photo-“Brumos RSR) orthe wild-looking, prototype Carrera RS Rally car (see photo-“Got lights?”), there was much to salivate over.In fact, the turn out for this year’s Fall Foliage Tour was sogreat that it was necessary to split the cars up into twoseparate groups so we wouldn’t overwhelm the Devil’sBackbone Brewery, our luncheon destination. It also allowedsome of us more time to drool over the cars at G & WMotorwerkes before setting off toward the Blue Ridge Parkwaycomplete with Waynesboro Police assistance to guide usthrough the stop lights of downtown. With our flat sixes, turbo fours and V-8’s snarling like a column of angry bees, wemade our way along the twisting Blue Ridge and twisted ourway down through some truly spectacular scenery to Devil’sBackbone Brewery. As if the first wave of Porsches wasn’tenough to overwhelm another German car club who justhappened to also have selected the Devil’s Backbone as theirclub’s destination, our second wave sent them scurrying tothe bar spinning their “whirling propellers” to re-think who “theUltimate Driving Machine” really is.Many thanks to Phil and Susie Audibert for anotherunforgettable tour as well as Weldon and Phyllis Scroghamfor hosting the pre-tour festivities at their stunning G & Wshowroom, to Sherry Westfall, our president elect, for herassistance in coordinating the event , to all the folks at Devil’sBackbone Brewery who provided us with excellent food anddrink (I may have to go back for another one of those KungPow IPA’s!), and of course, to all our members and theirwonderful cars who turned out for the event.
