In spite of such claims, Wimber’s healing success was nobetter than that of any Bible-believing pastor who prays forhis people.Five Christian medical doctors attended a Wimber healingcrusade in Leeds, England, and concluded: “We saw nochange that suggested any healing of organic, physicaldisease” (Dr. Verna Wright, “A Medical View of MiraculousHealing,” chapter 11 of Peter Masters, e Healing Epidemic,1988, p. 213; Wright is Chief of Rheumatology at LeedsUniversity). During the Leeds crusade, a girl with deeppsychiatric problems who fell down screaming and waspronounced healed had to be committed to a psychiatrichospital three months later. When questioned about his healing ministry in Australia inMarch 1990, Wimber admitted that not all diseases areequally responsive to his “healing ministry.” He said that hehad a high success rate for headaches and back aches but thatof the 200 Down Syndrome children he had prayed over nonehad been healed (Phillip D. Jensen, “John Wimber ChangesHis Mind!” e Protestant Review, July 1990).In other words, John Wimber could “heal” sicknesses thatcannot be seen and that can be “healed” just as successfullyby hypnotists and shamans and Christian Sciencepractitioners, but he could not heal organic diseases.erefore, he definitely did not operate in “the stuff”--themanifest healing power--exercised by Jesus Christ in theGospels and by the apostles in the book of Acts. WhatWimber tragically failed to understand is that Christ and theapostles did not perform miracles as examples for us toimitate. Christ performed miracles to authenticate HisMessiahship (John 5:26; 10:25, 37-38; 14:11; 15:24; 20:30-31)and the apostles performed miracles to authenticate theirapostleship (Mark 3:14-15; 2 Corinthians 12:12). If allbelievers could perform such miracles, they would berendered ineffective as authenticating signs. (For more onthis see e Pentecostal-Charismatic Movements, which is405
