committed to Scripture alone. e Promise Keepersmovement was founded by men involved in the Vineyard,including founder Bill McCartney. ough Wimber was notPentecostal, he accepted and popularized many unscripturalPentecostal-type practices, including “slaying in the Spirit,”“prophecy,” “words <strong>of</strong> knowledge,” and Pentecostal-style faithhealing.Wimber was a radical ecumenist who frequently spoke onthe same platform with Roman Catholic priests. In 1986,Wimber joined Catholic priest Tom Forrest and AnglicanMichael Harper at the European Festival <strong>of</strong> Faith, anecumenical meeting in Birmingham, England. e Festivalleaders sent the pope this message: “We are ready to join youin the united evangelism <strong>of</strong> Europe” (Australian Beacon,March 1988).Wimber actively encouraged the reunification <strong>of</strong>Protestants with the church <strong>of</strong> Rome. “During the Vineyardpastors’ conference, he went so far as to ‘apologize’ to theCatholic church on behalf <strong>of</strong> all Protestants ... He stated that‘the pope, who by the way is very responsive to thecharismatic movement, and is himself a born-againevangelical, is preaching the Gospel as clear as anyone in theworld today’” (John Wimber, Church Planting Seminar, audiotapes, 5 volumes, unedited, 1981, cited by Pastor JohnGoodwin).is radical ecumenism is spread through Vineyard music.e Vintage Vineyard Music series is advertised as “Vineyard’sall-time worship classics THAT CONTINUE TO BE SUNGC ROSS-DENOM I NAT IONA L LY I N C H U RCHESAROUND THE WORLD.”In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Wimber managed themisnamed rock group “e Righteous Brothers.” He claimedthat his Christian conversion occurred in 1962 under theguidance <strong>of</strong> a Quaker, and by 1970 Wimber was pastoring amystical-oriented Quaker church.399
