Instead, they devote their energies to letting usknow that they are concerned and to creating an awarenessabout those problems” (U2: e Rolling Stone Files, p. 10).What a pitiful testimony for professing Christian musicianswho COULD be preaching the light of the Word of God to adark and hell-bound world.Consider, for example, the lyrics to “When Love Comes toTown”:“I was there when they crucified my lord/ I held the scabbardwhen the soldier drew his sword/ I threw the dice when theypierced his side/ But I’ve seen love conquer the great divide.When love comes to town I’m gonna catch that train/ Whenlove comes to town I’m gonna catch that flame/ Maybe I waswrong to ever let you down/ But I did what I did before lovecame to town.”is is typical of U2 songs. It intermingles thoughts about agirl at the beginning with thoughts possibly about the cross atthe end, but nothing is clear. Listeners can interpret theambiguous lyrics in a multitude of ways.386
