Building 429In July 2012, Building 429 was one of the bands featured atthe 14th annual Lifest in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Christianrock’s one-world church building enterprise was in full steamat this event. Other popular groups and artists participatingwere Switchfoot, Newsboys, Underoath, Norma Jean, TammyBorden, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, Love &Death, and Disciple. 15,000 enthusiastic fans gathered tocelebrate ecumenical unity through the sensual power of rock& roll. Participants could choose from three worship services, including a Catholic Mass led by Bishop David Ricken, whoofficially approves of the “Marian Apparitions” at the Shrineof Our Lady of Good Help in northern Wisconsin. eapparition appeared to Adele Brise in 1859 and said, “I amthe Queen of Heaven, who prays for the conversion ofsinners,” plainly identifying itself as a demon, since the onlyQueen of Heaven mentioned in Scripture is an idolatrousgoddess that was condemned by the prophet Jeremiah (Jer.7:18). at Christian rock is intimately associated with suchthings is clear evidence of its apostasy.Caedmon’s CallCaedmon’s Call is led by Cliff Young (vocals, guitar). AaronTate writes the songs for Caedmon’s Call. At least two of themen wear earrings, and Todd Bragg sports shoulder-lengthhair.e name of the group comes from a folk tale about anuntalented man who was called by God to sing and whoreceived his songs directly from God.ey focus their music on the college crowd, performing onlarge college campuses, but their philosophy is ecumenicaland worldly. ey perform for the Metro Bible Study, whichrepresents 128 churches in Houston, Texas. e speaker forthe Metro Bible Study is David Edwards, a Pentecostal whoserved on the staff of the Elim Bible Institute for more than24

20 years and who was on the steering committee of the NorthAmerican Renewal Service Committee, which sponsored themassive ecumenical-charismatic congresses in 1986, 1987,and 1990. I attended two of these (New Orleans ‘87 andIndianapolis ‘90) with press credentials. Half of the tens ofthousands in attendance were Roman Catholic and manyRoman Catholic priests were featured as speakers. A Catholicmass was conducted every morning of the conferences. (For areport on these conferences see the free eBook CharismaticConfusion, available from Way of Life -- www.wayoflife.org.)In an interview with TLeM (Lighthouse ElectronicMagazine), the members of Caedmon’s Call said their greatestlove in music is secular rock. ey mentioned Indigo Girls,Shawn Colvin, David Wilcox, e Police, Fishbone, 10,000Maniacs. ey oen perform Beatles music. Cliff Young saidone of his favorites is the foul-mouthed Alanis Morrisette.Young mocked a preacher who warns that Christianmusicians should not listen to secular rock. Young said thathe listens to secular rock & rollers because “they are beinghonest [about] struggles that they go through.” He saidChristians should not be so concerned that “she [Morrisette]says ‘damn’ and ‘hell’ in her songs” (Rob Berman, aconversation with Cliff Young and Todd Bragg, http://tlem.netcentral.net/indie/960701/caedmons_call.html). Wewould note that Morissette says much worse things than“damn” and “hell.” Rolling Stone magazine describes hermusic as “uncensored documentation of her psychosexualformer Catholic-girl torments” (Rolling Stone, No. 720).Young said: “I’d rather listen to someone who’s being honestand open, cussing in their songs, than someone who’s puttingup a front and writing a song to get a hit” (Ibid.). Who saidwe have to make such a silly choice! Why not just listen towholesome music? Everything is to be done to edification(Ephesians 4:29), and cursing certainly does not edify.Everything is to be done to the glory of Jesus Christ (125
