alone through faith alone by Christ alone and that worksfollow as the evidence of and fruit of salvation. For a bloodwashed,saved-by-grace believer to take all of the Lord’s NewTestament commandments seriously and seek to apply themto every area of life is not legalism; it is obedience to God.Lowry’s ecumenical, positive-only philosophy is evident inhis attitude toward preaching on Hell:“I also don’t believe in telling people to come to Christ becauseof hell, in scaring people. When we do, we wind up with justanother religious person. But if they come to Christ because noone has ever loved them like that before.... at’s the bottomline. Nobody’s ever loved you like that before” (Ibid.).e Lord Jesus Christ preached more on Hell than He didon Heaven. Consider His sermon in Mark 9:“And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee toenter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their wormdieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offendthee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, thanhaving two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shallbe quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is notquenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is betterfor thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, thanhaving two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their wormdieth not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:43-48).e apostles also boldly and plainly preached the judgmentof God to produce conviction in sinners and to lead them toChrist. Consider Paul’s sermon on Mars Hill:“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but nowcommandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hathappointed a day, in the which he will judge the world inrighteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof hehath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised himfrom the dead” (Acts 17:30-31).Paul certainly didn’t draw back from “scaring people” aboutHell.214
