Kimbla, an 18-metre research vessel on which <strong>the</strong> current survey was conducted.2.2 GRAB SAMPLINGFor each station, a 2-liter Van Veen grab <strong>and</strong> 250 ml Shipek grab were deployed at <strong>the</strong>same time. The Van Veen grab was used to collect biological samples as it usuallyreturned a larger amount <strong>of</strong> sediment than <strong>the</strong> Shipek, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shipek grab was used tosample geochemistry as it m<strong>in</strong>imised disturbance to <strong>the</strong> sample. The Shipek uses a spr<strong>in</strong>gloadedscoop triggered by <strong>the</strong> release <strong>of</strong> a slid<strong>in</strong>g weight on <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sampler as itmakes contact with <strong>the</strong> seabed. This device can collect an <strong>in</strong>tact sample <strong>of</strong> sediment up to5 cm by 12 cm <strong>in</strong> area <strong>and</strong> 5 cm thick. Upon trigger<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> grab immediately covers <strong>the</strong>sample, which prevents disturbance dur<strong>in</strong>g retrieval to <strong>the</strong> surface. Gra<strong>in</strong> size sampleswere taken from Van Veen grabs, unless <strong>the</strong> sample size was deemed too small, <strong>in</strong> whichcase it was taken from <strong>the</strong> Shipek grab.2.3 BIOLOGICAL SAMPLESThe sample from <strong>the</strong> Van Veen grab was immediately transferred to a Nally b<strong>in</strong>.Sediment height was measured at four corners <strong>and</strong> averaged <strong>in</strong> order to provide a directcomparison <strong>of</strong> sample size with <strong>the</strong> biological samples collected from GA309 (Andersonet al. 2009). We also weighed <strong>the</strong> sample by decant<strong>in</strong>g excess water through a 500-μmsieve <strong>and</strong> weigh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sediment <strong>and</strong> animals.All sediment was <strong>the</strong>n washed through a 500-μm sieve such that all animals <strong>and</strong> particleslarger than 500 μm were reta<strong>in</strong>ed. Macr<strong>of</strong>auna were photographed, <strong>and</strong> worms, zoanthids,<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r similar s<strong>of</strong>t-bodied animals were removed for preservation <strong>in</strong> 4% buffered8
