Starting—Scenario 3Level GradeAscending GradeDescending GradeDirection of TravelWhen starting the train on a descending grade:1. Make sure that the independent brake is fully applied.2. Release the automatic brake <strong>and</strong> wait for all brakes to release<strong>and</strong> slack to adjust.3. Reduce the independent brake until the train begins to movegradually.4. Once the entire train is moving, gradually reduce the independentbrake to avoid abrupt changes in slack.5.
