64 <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>lingc. If the wheels rotate freely <strong>and</strong> the wheel slip light remainson during throttle reduction, isolate the locomotive unitaffected.d. If the wheels do not rotate freely, notify the dispatcher <strong>and</strong>set out the locomotive if safe to do so.3. When operating over the crest of a grade:a. Reduce the throttle before the locomotive crests the grade.b. Continue to reduce the throttle to keep the speed fromincreasing until at least half of the train has crested thegrade.4. Do not apply power to hold a train stationary on a grade.64.4.1 Short Time RatingsA. Short Time Rating LimitsShort time rating limits apply to high amperage levels in any throttleposition.A rating plate is located near the load meter <strong>and</strong> gives the time limitsfor operating locomotives at various amperage levels. Always staywithin the time limits indicated by the rating plate.B. More Than One Consecutive Short Time RatingWhen operating a locomotive consist at more than one consecutiveshort time rate:1. Do not operate the locomotive for more than the maximum timeat the most restrictive consecutive short time rate.EXAMPLE: Do not operate a locomotive at the 1/4 hourrating for 1/4 hour, then at the 1/2 hour rating for 1/2 hour,then at the 1 hour rating for 1 hour, etc.2.
