64 <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>ling5. When slowing or stopping at a speed between 5 <strong>and</strong> 10 MPH,apply the locomotive brakes as necessary to prevent the locomotivefrom running out.6. If the wheel slip light or brake warning light comes on, reducethe brake h<strong>and</strong>le position until the light goes out. If the lightdoes not go out, stop the train <strong>and</strong> inspect the locomotive.NOTE: Dynamic braking will remain operational during anemergency brake application, whether initiated from thetrain or from the controlling locomotive.7. If an emergency brake application occurs while the throttle is inposition 1 through 8, place the throttle in IDLE.NOTE: Dynamic braking is immediately available withoutresetting the PCS.When approaching <strong>and</strong> operating throughturnouts or disturbed track areas, use thedynamic brake h<strong>and</strong>le position to limitretarding force to 50 percent of maximum asindicated by amperage or braking effort.64.3.3 Independent Brake (Locomotive Brake)When using the independent brake, follow these rules:EXCEPTION: When emergency braking is necessary to protectlife or property, these rules do not apply. Use the maximumbraking effort.1. Do not use the independent brake to control or slow a trainoperating at speeds more than 10 MPH.2.
