64 <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>ling3. When a train brake application is in effect with pressure maintainingequipment, do not move the automatic brake valveh<strong>and</strong>le toward RELEASE unless a brake release is desired.D. Making an Emergency Brake ApplicationA crew member must initiate an emergency brake application when:• Life or property is in danger.• The engineer cannot be informed to reduce train speed or stopthe train.or• The engineer does not respond to warnings or signals to reducetrain speed or stop the train.The crew member must know the location of the emergency air brakevalves, <strong>and</strong> when making the emergency brake application:1. Notify other employees that an emergency brake application is ineffect.2. Determine if the emergency brake application is in effect on theentire train.E. Unintentional Emergency Brake ApplicationWhen an unintentional emergency brake application occurs, <strong>and</strong>conditions allow you to recover <strong>and</strong> release the air brakes to determinethe location of the air hose separation or other problem, use thefollowing procedure:1. Move the throttle to IDLE.2. Move the automatic brake valve to EMERGENCY until thetrain stops.3. Wait 60 seconds.4. Move the automatic brake valve h<strong>and</strong>le to RELEASE to releasethe brakes <strong>and</strong> reset the PCS.NOTE: Before releasing the train air brakes, the train crewmust secure the train so that no undesired movement willoccur before the air brake system is sufficiently charged.64-4 ARRC <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Brakes</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>ling Manual June 1, 1996
