64 <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>ling64.2.1 Slowing or Controlling <strong>Train</strong> SpeedFollow these train h<strong>and</strong>ling requirements when slowing or controllinga train:1. When using the stretch braking method <strong>and</strong> the desired speedhas been reached, reduce the throttle until train brakes are fullyreleased.2. When using dynamic <strong>and</strong> air brakes <strong>and</strong> the desired speed hasbeen reached, maintain enough dynamic brake to control slackuntil the train brakes are fully released.3. When operating in curved territory, keep the total braking effortfrom dynamic brakes, automatic air brakes, <strong>and</strong> independentbrakes at the lowest practical level.64.3 <strong>Train</strong> BrakingEnsure compliance with Rule 64.1, General Requirements For <strong>Train</strong>H<strong>and</strong>ling, by using proper train braking.64.3.1 Automatic BrakeUse the automatic brake as follows:A. Applying or Reapplying <strong>Brakes</strong>When applying or reapplying brakes, make brake pipe reductionsaccording to these guidelines:1. Make an initial brake pipe reduction as follows:a. For a fully charged system, reduce the brake pipe at least5 psi.b. For an uncharged system, reduce the brake pipe 5 psi belowthe previous reduction.2. Limit brake pipe reductions as follows:a.
