63 <strong>Train</strong> Equipment <strong>and</strong> OperationCAUTION: Do not bottle the air or maintainair pressure in the brake pipe unlesslocomotives are attached or yard air iscoupled.63.11 Releasing H<strong>and</strong> <strong>Brakes</strong>To prevent wheel damage, fully release h<strong>and</strong> brakes before movingcars or locomotives. When releasing h<strong>and</strong> brakes:1. Turn the h<strong>and</strong> brake wheel counterclockwise several times untilthe chain is as slack as possible.2. If a h<strong>and</strong> brake is difficult to release, charge the car’s air brakesystem <strong>and</strong> apply the brakes in emergency before attempting torelease the h<strong>and</strong> brake again.3. Check at least an additional three cars beyond the last appliedh<strong>and</strong> brake to make sure that no other h<strong>and</strong> brakes are applied.4. Do not move cars with h<strong>and</strong> brakes applied where it would causewheel damage.63.12 Blocking WheelsFor equipment with defective or inoperative h<strong>and</strong> brakes, block thewheels securely unless the cars or locomotives are attached toequipment with enough h<strong>and</strong> brakes to prevent movement.To block wheels:1. Obtain wood or chain locally.2. Place the blocks securely against the front <strong>and</strong> back of enoughwheels to prevent movement.3.
