63 Train Equipment and Operation63.6.2 Inspecting For Leakage or ObstructionsImmediately inspect for leakage or obstructions if one or more of thefollowing occurs during charging:• The rear car brake pipe pressure stops rising before reaching therequired pressure.• The air flow indicator holds steady above 60 CFM.• The maximum charging time has been reached but the brake pipehas not attained the required charge.63.6.3 Reducing Brake Pipe PressureWhen higher than standard pressure is no longer required, reduce itas soon as possible, but no later than the next crew change point.63.6.4 Reducing Pressure In Overcharged TrainBrake SystemsReduce pressure in an overcharged train brake system as follows:1. Adjust the regulating valve to the desired pressure.2. Move the automatic brake valve to EMERGENCY and leave itin that position for at least 60 seconds.3. Move the automatic brake valve to RELEASE and leave it inthat position until brake pipe pressure on the controlling locomotivereaches 20 psi.4. Move the automatic brake valve to CONTINUOUS SERVICEand leave it in that position for at least 60 seconds.5. Move the automatic brake valve to RELEASE and charge thesystem to the required pressure.63.6.5 Applying Brakes After Train SeparationIn the event of a train separation, make a full service brake applicationto prevent possible train overcharge after the train has beenrecoupled but before the air is cut in.June 1, 1996 ARRC Air Brakes and Train Handling Manual 63-7
