62 Operating Locomotive Equipment62.9.2 Securing Unattended LocomotivesWhen securing locomotives:1. Place the throttle in IDLE unless you are protecting the enginefrom freezing (see Rule 62.3.2, Protecting Engine From Freezing).2. Place the generator field switch or the circuit breaker on thecontrol st<strong>and</strong> (if equipped) in the OFF position.3. Remove the reverser h<strong>and</strong>le from the reverser slot on the controlst<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> place it in the receptacle, if equipped. Do not removethe reverser h<strong>and</strong>le if you need to increase the throttle position toprevent freezing.4. If the locomotive is not attached to a train, make a 20 psi automaticbrake pipe reduction after allowing the brake system tocharge for at least 5 minutes.5. Leave the automatic brake valve cut in.6. Fully apply the independent brake.7. Apply a sufficient number of h<strong>and</strong> brakes.62.10 Separating LocomotivesWhen separating locomotives:1. Disconnect electric jumper cables.2. Disconnect walkway safety chains.3. Close cutout cocks.4. After pressure is reduced to 0 psi, uncouple MU hoses.5.
