62 Operating Locomotive Equipment62.3.1 Defects Found EnrouteA. Reporting Defect That Is Not a Non-Complying ConditionExamples of a defect or problem that is not a non-complying conditioninclude:• Weather stripping is defective.• Windshield wipers are not working.• Crossing lights are burned out.• One headlight bulb is burned out.• Ground relay is tripped.• Safety valve on the air compressor or main reservoir ispopping off.If a defect or problem found enroute is not a non-complying condition:1. Complete a Locomotive Daily Inspection and Trip Report(ARRC Form 22-0105) for each locomotive in the consist with adefect or problem.2. Leave the form in the cab cardholder on the locomotive unit withthe defect.3. Report any locomotive not producing power to the train dispatcheror other proper authority.B. Handling and Reporting Locomotives With Major DefectsIf a locomotive enroute has a major internal defect:1. If possible, isolate the locomotive.2. Shut down the diesel engine immediately if noise indicates aninternal mechanical defect in:• Diesel engine• Turbochargeror• Components related to the above62-14 ARRC Air Brakes and Train Handling Manual June 1, 1996
62 Operating Locomotive Equipment3. If you shut down the engine, do not restart the engine until theequipment has been inspected and can be operated withoutdamaging the locomotive.C. Setting Out Defective LocomotivesSet out a locomotive with a major defect only if the defect requiresthat the locomotive be set out. To set out the locomotive:1. Leave the locomotive where maintenance personnel canaccess it.2. Leave the Locomotive Daily Inspection and Trip Report, indicatingthe defect and its location, in the cab cardholder.3. Notify the train dispatcher.62.3.2 Protecting Engine From FreezingFollow these steps to protect an engine from freezing:1. If the ambient temperature is below 32 °F and the engine dies:a. Try to restart the engine within 5 minutes.b. If the engine cannot be restarted, drain the engine immediately.2. If the ambient temperature is below 32 °F and the engine isidling:• If the temperature will not go below 0 °F, keep the engineidling.• If the temperature is below 0 °F, follow these steps to increasethe engine RPM:a. Place the reverser in the CENTER position.b. Place the generator field switch in the OFF position.c. Place the throttle in throttle 4.3. Take precautions to prevent an isolated locomotive from freezingup. Drain the engine if necessary.June 1, 1996 ARRC Air Brakes and Train Handling Manual 62-15
