61 Air Brake TestsNOTE: If conditions permit, you may perform this test at 1MPH to 3 MPH and allow the locomotive to drift with thethrottle in IDLE.61.11 Brake Cutouts On LocomotivesAll ARRC locomotives are equipped with brake cutout cocks on eachtruck and on each side of the locomotive.• The cutout cocks on the engineer’s side control the brakes onboth sides of the truck.• The cutout cocks on the fireman’s side control the brakes on thatside only.61-14 ARRC Air Brakes and Train Handling Manual June 1, 1996
62 Operating Locomotive Equipment62 OPERATING LOCOMOTIVEEQUIPMENT62.1 General RequirementsEngineers are responsible for the following:1. If possible, position yourself so you can conduct a roll-byinspection of an incoming locomotive consist.2. Keep the side and end doors of the locomotive closed when thedoors are not being used.3. Keep cab windows and doors of unoccupied, trailing locomotivesclosed.4. Keep the locomotive’s high voltage cabinets closed duringoperation.5. Isolate locomotives before opening any electrical cabinet doormarked “Danger.”6. During cold weather, make sure that cab heaters are on andworking.7. Check for sliding wheels at frequent intervals if:• The locomotive is dead.• The locomotive is isolated.or• The locomotive’s traction motors are isolated.8. Verify that brake pipe exhaust ports are not plugged or obstructed.9. Verify that the independent brake valve handle is not blocked inthe actuate position.10. Verify that the reverser is centered when the locomotive is notmoving.11.
