68 EOT Telemetry Devices• A message from the EOT unit that would normally produce adisplay in the left 4 digits (such as a Weak Battery message)instead produces only beeps. A message from the EOT unitdoes not override the odometer display.• An alarm from the LCU itself (such as a No Communicationsalarm) does briefly override the odometer display forthe duration of the alarm.B. Displaying a Distance ReadingThe DIST button allows the engineer to obtain a reading of thedistance traveled by the locomotive.NOTE: If the odometer has been calibrated, the LCU will give adistance measurement that compensates for the wheel size. If theodometer has not been calibrated, the LCU will give an approximatedistance. (See Rule 68.8.3C, Calibrating the Odometer.)Follow these steps to display a distance reading:1. Press DIST. The left 4 digits of the display start at 0000 (feet)and change as the train moves forward or backward.2. Press DIST again to stop the display and show the total distancetraveled in feet.3. Press DIST again to cancel the display and return to the normaldisplay.C. Calibrating the OdometerThe CAL button allows the engineer to calibrate the odometer over ameasured mile while compensating for wheel size variations. Thisgives a more accurate distance measurement.Follow these steps to calibrate the odometer:1. At the start of a measured mile, press CAL. The display shows[ CAL ON ] for 1 second, then shows a 4-digit display of thedistance traveled in feet.68-24 ARRC Air Brakes and Train Handling Manual June 1, 1996
