68 EOT Telemetry Devices6 8 EOT TELEMETRY DEVICESAn end-of-train telemetry device transmits data concerning trainfunctions from the rear car to the locomotive cab. This data informsthe engineer of any operating problems that require corrections.68.1 Overview Of TRAINLINK II End-of-<strong>Train</strong>Telemetry Device68.1.1 TRAINLINK II ComponentsTRAINLINK ® II is a second-generation radio end-of-train (EOT)telemetry system that consists of:• End-of-<strong>Train</strong> (EOT) Unit mounted on the trailing coupler of thelast car• Locomotive Cab Unit (LCU) mounted in the locomotive68.1.2 TRAINLINK II FunctionsTRAINLINK ® II performs all basic functions of TRAINLINK ® I <strong>and</strong>in addition can initiate EOT emergency braking. This emergencybraking function requires a front-to-rear radio channel <strong>and</strong> the usualrear-to-front channel. Radio transmitters at both the locomotive <strong>and</strong>the last car perform this function.End-of-<strong>Train</strong> (EOT) Unit. The EOT unit transmits last car dataapproximately every 55 seconds.Locomotive Cab Unit (LCU). The LCU functions as follows:• It automatically polls the EOT every 10 minutes by sending arequest for status update. This polling verifies that the communicationslink is working properly.• It has an internal audio alarm that alerts the engineer of animportant change in status.• In conjunction with the EOT, it provides train crews with statusupdates <strong>and</strong> functional capabilities including:June 1, 1996 ARRC <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Brakes</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Train</strong> H<strong>and</strong>ling Manual 68-1
