Inspection Report: Kool Kids Club 3, 01/07/2011
Introduction
This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the
Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years
provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children
from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group).
The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory
framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early
Years Foundation Stage.
The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the
setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the
report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service
(The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).
Children only attend this setting before and/or after the school day and/or during
the school holidays. The judgements in this report reflect the quality of early years
provision offered to children during those periods.
The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group
which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare
Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a
comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is
included in Annex B.
Please see our website for more information about each childcare provider. We
publish inspection reports, conditions of registration and details of complaints we
receive where we or the provider take action to meet the requirements of
registration.
This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
Inspection Report: Kool Kids Club 3, 01/07/2011
Description of the setting
Kool Kids Club registered in 2005. The club is located within Parkgate Primary
School in the Holbrook area of Coventry, West Midlands. Children have access to
the dining hall, sports hall, two classrooms and an outdoor play area. The club is
open to all children from the surrounding areas.
The club is registered by Ofsted on the Early Years Register and the compulsory
part of the Childcare Register. A maximum of 40 children from three to under eight
years may attend the club at any one time. It opens five days a week, term time
only. Sessions are from 7.45am until 9.00am and from 3.15pm until 6pm. Children
attend for a variety of sessions. The club is in receipt of funding for early education
places. There are currently 27 children on roll, six of whom are in the early years
age group.
There are two staff who work with the children. Of these, one holds a National
Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 3 in childcare and education and in
playwork and one holds a NVQ at level 2 in Playwork and is working towards a
NVQ at level 3. The club receives support from the local authority.
The overall effectiveness of the early years provision
Overall the quality of the provision is good.
Children are developing confidence and making good progress at this welcoming
club. Dedicated staff are highly approachable and professional, fostering excellent
partnerships with parents, carers and the host school. Inclusion is well-considered.
This ensures children's well-being is supported and individuality respected. Staff
plan a good balance of child-initiated play activities, covering most aspects of the
Early Years Foundation Stage well. Detailed documentation supports the smooth
running of the club, ensuring children play safely. Evaluation and improvement
procedures are inclusive and realistic in identifying priorities for the future.
What steps need to be taken to improve provision
further?
To further improve the early years provision the registered person should:
provide more opportunities for children to explore a wider range of creative
resources
review the routine to ensure children have daily opportunities for outdoor
play.
This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
Inspection Report: Kool Kids Club 3, 01/07/2011
The effectiveness of leadership and management of
the early years provision
Safeguarding is given good priority as staff understand their duty to escalate
concerns and be vigilant to the signs of abuse or neglect. Recruitment procedures
are robust and documentation reflects ongoing vetting and suitability checks. This
shows that children's safety and well-being is prioritised. Security systems are
good and have been updated to include coded doors to ensure the building is
sufficiently secure. Staff undertake daily safety checks and ensure the risk
assessment is reviewed and updated in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage
requirements. Children's record cards are detailed and include personal information
relating to health and dietary needs. Family contact numbers are updated to
ensure prompt contact can be made in the event of an emergency. Staff ensure
their first aid training is up-to-date and adhere to good practice when handling
food, such as recording fridge temperatures. This ensures children's health needs
are well-supported.
Children play in a bright, welcoming environment and say they enjoy attending the
club. They appreciate making new friends and say their favourite snack is noodles.
A good selection of sustainable resources, including games, sand and water play
ensures children experience variety in their activities. All children are welcomed
and included as staff have a good understanding of different learning styles. For
example, staff recognise that boys are sometimes more reluctant than girls to join
in writing and creative tasks and try to encourage all children's participation.
Staff have forged a very successful partnership with the host school that is very
supportive of the club. Staff liaise extremely well with teaching staff, exchanging
information relating to children's well-being and care needs. Other agencies are
expertly consulted in order to illicit support for families as required. Good team
work is evident as staff support and encourage each other with ideas and in
accessing professional training. Staff act as good role models and know children
very well, clearly enjoying their company, through conversations and sharing
jokes. Links with parents and carers are excellent. Parents and carers speak very
highly of the club and feel they provide an essential service that they heavily rely
on. They are very reassured that their children play safely, enjoy the activities and
value the support and professionalism provided by staff. Newsletters, daily contact
and formal parents' evenings ensure parents and carers are kept up-to-date with
how the club operates and on their children's progress. Evaluation procedures are
effective in identifying future plans and priorities. Questionnaires and a comments
box are used to ensure parents, carers and children can make suggestions and
directly influence the running of the club.
The quality and standards of the early years provision
and outcomes for children
Children achieve well because staff have a good knowledge of the Early Years
Foundation Stage and deliver a balanced range of activities incorporating playwork
This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
principles. Planning, assessment and observation systems are well-considered to
ensure children experience variety and challenge in activities. Children's learning
journeys give a good overview of progress and provide a lovely keepsake reflecting
children's time at the club. Older children contribute to planning by listing their
favourite activities and choosing resources from the storage cupboard, with
support from staff. Attractive displays within the club include children's paintings of
fish, flowers and silhouettes of friends, showing their efforts are appreciated.
Children develop a good understanding of diversity through planned activities and
discussions. For example, children dress up and make diva lamps to help celebrate
Diwali.
Children are developing good, trusting relationships with staff by sharing their
news from school on arrival at the club. Older children show good pencil control
skills as they carefully trace pictures of motorbikes, then use crayons to colour
their pictures. Children are beginning to link sounds to letters as they sound out
the letters in their names with support from staff. Mathematical ideas, problemsolving
skills and imagination are developing as children play with sand and water.
For example, children mould sand to make ice cream cones and drinks. During
water play, children pretend to sink a boat and then rescue a drowning figure.
While children have access to a good range of creative materials, there is also
further scope to provide more opportunities for children to work in two or three
dimensions using malleable materials. Children have good opportunities to
enhance their technological skills as the club has invested in new information and
communication technology equipment, including a laptop and presentation screen.
Children take part in a variety of physical activities, including table tennis, football
and climbing trees. They have use of a delightful outside area, although this is not
always used to its full potential and children comment that they would like to
spend more time outdoors. Overall, all children show good skills to support their
future learning.
Children are encouraged to make healthy choices as staff vary the snack menu to
include different types of bread and fruit. Children select sandwich fillings and
make their own sandwiches and wraps. They have enhanced the cafe style area by
making flowers and menus for the table and sit together, making snack time a
sociable occasion. Children are encouraged to wash their hands and staff use antibacterial
gel as part of promoting good hygiene practice for all. Children behave
very well; they are polite and are developing good habits, such as consideration
and respect for each other and staff. Older children are protective towards younger
children, helping them to line up and making sure they have the resources they
need while doing a tracing activity. Children say they feel safe at the club and
would talk to staff if they were worried or concerned. Children are beginning to
take responsibility for their personal safety as they take part in fire drills and are
alert to slip hazards, such as water on the floor.
