Before PlayingHandling the InstrumentThe instrument is made with very thin metal so please handle it with care. Do not applyany excessive force, or bump it in a manner that will dent or damage the instrument.■ Removing the InstrumentFrom Its Case1. Holding the instrument with both hands, gently remove the instrument from its case.Slide Braces■ Preparing the Slide* Holding only the main section of theinstrument can result in damage to thebell, so please hold on to both the bell andthe main part of the instrument whenremoving it from the case.1. Remove dirt from inside of the inner slidethen apply a bit of slide cream on theslightly thicker end sections of the slide.Inner slide2. When removing the slide from the case, hold the slide with both hands hooking afinger on the slide brace to keep the slidefrom moving, and gently lift the slide outof the case.Apply slide cream to these parts* Do not use slide grease on these parts.2. After applying slide cream, use a waterspray bottle to moisten the slide sufficiently.* Always hold the slide with both hands.Holding it with only one hand may resultin damage to the slide.* When carrying only the slide, make surethat both of the slide braces are heldtogether to prevent either section of theslide from dropping.20

Before Playing3. Put the outer slide on the inner slide andslide the two sections back and forth severaltimes to distribute the cream evenly.■ Oiling the Rotary ValveOn tenor bass trombones and bass trombones, apply rotor oil directly to the rotary valvethrough the slide receiver.Bell* The amount of slide cream applied to theslide has an effect on how smooth theslide moves. Experiment with differentamounts of cream to determine theoptimum amount necessary.* If the slide becomes sluggish whileplaying, moisten the slide with the waterspray bottle.Receiver* Rotor oil adhering to the inside of thereceiver can attract dirt and dust to therotary valve resulting in poor function. Please use caution.CAUTION!Preventing the Slide From Coming OffThe slide consists of outer and inner slidesections. Make sure that the slide lock ringis securely locked to keep the outer slidefrom accidentally coming off when assemblingthe instrument, etc.Slide StopperSlide Lock RingOuter SlideWhen Locked21

Also, handle the instrumentwith care, being careful not to bump ordamage it.■ Attaching the MouthpieceInsert the mouthpiece until it just fits snugly inthe mouthpiece receiver and is no longer loose.* Make sure you hold on to the bell sectionclose to the slide receiver. If you hold on tothe tuning slide, the tuning slide may comeoff or poor stability may result in theinstrument being bumped.3. Attach the slide section to the main bellsection. Attach the slide so that it is at asuitable angle when you play.* Never insert the mouthpiece with force orunnecessary strength. The mouthpiecemay become stuck in the receiver.22

Before Playing■ Tuning the InstrumentSlide the main tuning slide in or out to tunethe instrument. Since temperatures have an effecton the instrument’s pitch, blow some warmair through the instrument to warm it up beforetuning. On trombones with double rotary valves, thelevers can be used to change the pitch fromBb-F, Bb-G, or Gb (when a D attachment isused), Bb-Eb (when a D attachment is used).First LeverAdjust the length of the main tuning slide untilyou achieve the desired pitch.SecondRotary ValveFirstRotary ValveSecond LeverMain Tuning SlideAbout the rotary valveOn trombones with a single rotary valve, engagingthe valve with the lever will changethe pitch from Bb to F.BbFFirst Lever Second Lever Pitch Using DAttachmentX X Bb -O X F -X O G GbO O Eb DO ...
