From the PresidentFocused on the jobOur thirteenth season isnow upon us and like you Iam really looking forward toseeing our season unfold. While everyone enjoyed our 2006 seasonwith a record third place at the end of thehome and away season and a PreliminaryFinal appearance against Sydney, it is stilldisappointing to be that close to a Grand Finalberth, and yet not in the end get there. While much can be taken out of last year’sperformances, especially over the second halfof the year, we all know that it counts for nothingand it all must start all over again in 2007.The club has recruited well in the off-seasonand gaining two very experienced players inChris Tarrant and Dean Solomon to our club hasbeen fantastic. Whilst still at a relatively youngage, each have played over 150 AFL gamesand included in those tallies are over 20 finalsgames and two grand final appearances each. Both players are great additions to our playingsquad and will no doubt serve our club well. Our coaching ranks have also been boostedas Subiaco Premiership coach Peter Germanjoined the club in the off-season.It is not only the playing group that has beenwelcoming new additions. Our membershipdepartment has been busy welcoming manynew members to our club. We have set anothermembership record, our fifth consecutive, withover 41,000 members. Our corporate support also has been fantastic. We have sold all standard game day hospitalitypackages and new corporate packages havebeen developed to meet the increased demandfrom the corporate sector for game dayhospitality at Subiaco Oval. Fremantle now hasover 550 corporate clients, a record for the club. This continued growth reflects the growing statusof Fremantle. Off-field we further establishedour position in the upper echelons of thecompetition. On-field we have made in-roads intothe competition as we have planned, though wehave another tough and challenging year ahead. The competition is very even and all teamshave added talented players to their squadsand developed their fitness and game plansduring the off season. Teams will be impactedby injuries and adversity during the year, and itis the teams that survive these two factors thatwill ultimately have the best chance of success. No club can afford to look beyond the upcomingchallenge and if it does it runs the risk of losingfocus. Fremantle will remain focused every dayof every week through 2007.There will be expectations on Fremantle thisyear. Whatever those expectations may be,within the club there is a very clear plan andfocus on not allowing any external factors toinfluence what we are setting out to achieve.Fremantle is about playing consistently eachweek with a very clear target of achieving the12 or 13 wins necessary to make the eight.Only when that is achieved will the club thentarget positions higher within the eight.Let this be another year where our loyaltyand passion can be seen and heard aroundthe country.Fremantle Football Club value your continuedpassionate support, and we hope we candeliver you a wonderful year of football and theexcitement that comes with it.Go Dockers!Rick Hart, PresidentBank Extends SupportAt this year’s team photo shoot, the clubproudly announced that Members Equity Bank(ME) would become the club’s match day ballsponsor for the next two years. ME is currentlythe club’s shorts sponsor (until 2008) and thisincreased commitment, with the addition of thematch day ball sponsorship, sees ME rise tobecome a Diamond Level Sponsor of the club.Fremantle Chief Executive Officer CameronSchwab said that the club was thrilled that MEhad extended their partnership with the club.“Although ME was established in 1999, it hasits origins back in 1994 just as the FremantleFootball Club does,” Mr Schwab said. “ME isa very strong and proud Australian company, managing the financial interests of workingAustralian families, owned by 40 industrysuperannuation funds it now has over 80superannuation funds affiliated with it,”said Mr Schwab.Paul Kelly, National Advertising andSponsorship Manager at ME said that the bankwas proud and excited to extend its associationfurther with the Fremantle Football Club.“Our relationship with Fremantle has beenfantastic since we came on board as a gold levelsponsor in 2006. We share a similar value setand we’re looking forward to working together anddeveloping the relationship in the years to come.“We are excited about our increased presenceon the field in 2007 with the ME logo proudlydisplayed on both the playing shorts and thehome day match ball,” Mr Kelly said.fremantlefc.com.au April 2007 Docker

The message is thefoundation of a new partnership announced betweenthe club and the Drug and Alcohol Office. It is part ofthe Enough is Enough campaign to reduce drunkennessand change the drinking culture in Western Australia.Fremantle President Rick Hart said the club woulduse its profile in the community to help spread theEnough is Enough message.“The effects of excessive drinking are significant andeveryone in the community should be concerned,”he said.“We will use our presence within the community tosupport the Enough is Enough campaign.”Mr Hart said the Enough is Enough message wasnot about stopping anyone from enjoying a drink ofalcohol; rather about keeping alcohol under controland being responsible.“Our players are high profile young people who, asmost young people do, enjoy a drink from time totime,” he said.“They are focused, full-time athletes who train hardand monitor their diets, sleeping habits and exerciseregimes every hour for 10 months a year.“We also encourage them to ensure that their lives arewell-rounded. After all, they are young people who shouldbe enjoying every part of life’s learning experiences.“The club’s education programs for the players covera wide range of subject matter, and especially beingresponsible when they consume alcohol.“We all know that from time to time there will beindividuals who will lapse and it is our role as a clubto educate those individuals.”The partnership between the Fremantle Football Cluband the Drug and Alcohol Office is a sponsorshiparrangement involving Healthway that will buildawareness of the Enough is Enough campaign overthe next three years.Fremantle CEOCameron Schwaband Health MinisterJim McGinty launchthe Enough isEnough partnershipMore onHealth Minister Jim McGinty said he was excitedabout the partnership because it was an opportunityto raise awareness in the community about thesignificant costs of alcohol misuse.“It is estimated that alcohol misuse costs the WestAustralian community about $750 million each year,”he said.“Eight thousand West Australians end up in hospitalevery year because of alcohol-fuelled assaults andinjuries, and more than 30,000 attend emergencydepartments. About 325 people die every year fromexcessive alcohol use.“It also makes significant contributions to crime, socialdisruption, family breakdown and violence, injury, lost labour and productivity, property damage, roadcrashes and health costs.“Turning around drunkenness and associated problemsneeds the support of the community and the creationof safer drinking places. It needs families, friends andservers of alcohol to say enough is enough.“With the support of the Fremantle Football Club wecan change the way West Australians think aboutdrinking; we can create safer environments tosocialise in with family and friends; and we can teachour young people how to keep alcohol under control.”fremantlefc.com.au April 2007 Docker

I couldn’t use the van becausethe other two were asleep in it.“Once I knew that I was going to be traded I wentstraight on to London so that I could be in contactwith my manager and get a feel for what washappening.“I wanted to have a chat to Essendon and also toFremantle to see how interested they were, and theywere very interested.“There was a nine-hour time difference, so onthe last day of trade week as the deadline wasgetting closer I was out walking around London inthe early hours of the morning.“To be honest, I was very worried about what myfuture held. Mates6 Dean Solomonhours to go before the deadline,” Tarrant said.Once the paperwork was submitted to completethe move of Tarrant to Fremantle, the remainingtrade deal had not progressed far at all, that ofsecuring Solomon from Essendon. With the deadline rapidly closing, Essendon andFremantle officials still could not find the deal tofinalise the Solomon move. With the minutes passing, the two mates wereon the phone. Tarrant at AFL trade headquartersat Telstra Dome and Solomon pacing the streets ofLondon in the early hours of the morning waitingfor the news he wanted. With five minutes left until the 2pm deadline toclose the trade period, agreement was reached andthe paperwork rapidly lodged with the AFL.With Tarrant counting down the clock, Solomoncould only wait. It was fitting that his good mategave him the news that the deal was all done andthat childhood dream of playing footy together inthe AFL could become reality. Both were now heading west to join their newclub, to make new homes and new friends.“Taz and I came across to Fremantle aboutthree weeks before the guys were due back for preseasontraining and I was really impressed with theclub and the people,” says Solomon.“The professional way they go about things andwe went in to the boardroom and met all the staff, everyone just made us feel welcome, they wereso friendly.“It’s a very balanced club, very level-headedplace – they have set goals that they want to achieveand they are just very focused on those.”Tarrant had similar impressions, saying that“it’s a real football club and you get a sense of thatwhen you walk into the place, into the gym andchange rooms”.“They are really professional, very friendly andvery welcoming,” Tarrant said. And the two long time mates can make thetransition together, something both see as anadded bonus.“Having a mate here with you who is goingthrough the same things is great,” Solomon says.“But it’s not just Taz, it’s also Robert Shaw andMark Harvey who have also had to make the samemove and they have helped as well.“It is good to have a mate here when you aresettling in.“I played with Robbie Haddrill in 2004 on theIreland tour and got to know him so he has beengreat as well,” Solomon said.Tarrant agrees, adding “just being able to playAFL footy with Solly will be fantastic”.“We used to always talk about it even when wewere back at school but knew it couldn’t happenwith the rules of the draft at the time.“So to be able to have that chance now isgreat and I am really looking forward to the firstgame together.“And having him here going through the samechanges that I am going through is a big help,”says Tarrant.Settled and living near the beach, both havecompleted their pre-seasons and have notchedvaluable game time with their new team mates.Their pre-seasons though have taken vastlydifferent tracks.Tarrant underwent surgery in October to relievecalf tension, an injury with which he played themajority of the 2006 season, playing most matcheswith constant pain in his calves that impactedhis performances. His pre-season has been oneof rehabilitation, spending most of the summerin the gym and only resuming running and teamtraining sessions in mid-February. TechnologyTechnology BoostThe off-season has seen the club invest heavily in the resourcesavailable to the football department. As it did leading into the 2006season when over $250,000 was invested in new gym and conditioningequipment and player performance monitoring technology, the club hasresourced its back office technology with a similar investment in 2007.Within the highly competitive AFLenvironment, advantages that can be gainedin any facet of the football operations, nomatter how small, can have an impact. Thetechnology investment for 2007 aims to givethe club gains in opposition analysis, gameand player preparation, and individual playerperformance analysis.Fremantle Chief Executive Officer CameronSchwab says although there was greatsuccess last season with the new conditioningtechnology, including the use of GPS and heartratemonitors, there was a need to improve theclub’s use of technology.“It was an area that we saw as a weakness inour club,” Mr Schwab said. “We probably rankourselves in the bottom four or five clubs in thearea of football information and IT, and we’renow very keen to get ourselves in the very topgroup of clubs.“There’s an enormous amount of resources thatare required for the development and educationof players. Whether it be educating a player toplay on a particular opponent, or trading andscouting at the end of the year when we may belooking at a player that we are seeking to bringinto our football club.”To make that technology gain, the cutting edgeSportsCode technology was acquired by theclub. The implementation of SportsCode alsocoincided with some significant changes alsoin the Football Department staffing. The firstof these changes arose from the club’s annualend-of-season review in 2006 where it wasidentified that more coaching resources wererequired to the midfield area, particularly witha greater focus on rotations and set-plays.As a result, dual Subiaco Premiership coachPeter German joined the club as AssistantCoach responsible for the midfield and balltransition while Assistant Coach MichaelBroadbridge took on the role of implementationof the advanced hardware and softwareapplications for the players and coaching staffwhile also retaining coaching responsibility forclearances both in the centre and around theground.Broadbridge says his role will be to ensure thatthe new SportsCode system is implementedand applied within the football department tomaximise its value to the players and coaches.“It’s not so much having the technology buthow it’s utilised,” Broadbridge said. “It’s aboutmaking our football department a leader in theuse of technology.”“Our objective is to improve the quality ofcoaching and player education systems atFremantle.“The SportsCode editing system is regardedas the best vision editing system in sportand is used extensively throughout the world,”Broadbridge said.Developed by local company Sportstec, andused across a range of motion sports aroundthe globe and by some of the world’s elitesporting organisations, the SportsCode systemconverts TV and video footage into digital datathat can be easily searched. This gives the club’s match committee theability to analyse specific criteria and thenpresent edited clips to individual players. The coaches are also able to segment differentmoves and plays to in-depth levels by describingan individual event, such as inside 50s.The second of the staff changes hasseen Jeremy Davy join the club as FootballTechnology Manager. Davy spent six years withHockey Australia’s Men’s Program, where hefulfilled a similar role.“He is highly regarded, and has done a fantasticjob in getting the infrastructure set up,”Broadbridge said.“Jeremy’s experience has already shown howmuch an advantage the SportsCode system willbe and the tremendous capabilities that thetechnology has for Fremantle.”The new technology has seen a players’ learningcentre established with five iMac workstations, each with access to all the football statisticalinformation and vision necessary.“The idea of the learning centre is to have aninformal environment in which the playersand coaches can work with the system,”Broadbridge said.“At each workstation, the players can eithereducate themselves or get a coach to walkand talk them through the statistics andvision available.“It will eventually be set-up like a librarywhere the players have access to a range ofinformation and they are starting to becomeproficient at using the iMacs.”Broadbridge says the analysis of game data, training services, and forward scouting isconstantly evolving, and it is imperativethat Fremantle is in touch with the latestdevelopments with the aim to be the leader.“The only limit of the use of technology is yourimagination – you can do anything you want ifyou have the vision.“It is amazing what can be done from a coachingpoint of view in terms of tracking individualplayers, match-up tracking, ball-movement,the list is endless,” he said.Going hand-inhandwith theSportsCodetechnology, each coach hasbeen allocateda “Coda”– a palm-sizedtablet wherevision can betime codedimmediately asinstances occurduring a gamethat they wantto review later.JeremyDavyfremantlefc.com.au April 2007 Docker 17

A Quick KickPeter German joined the club at the end of last season as AssistantCoach from WAFL club Subiaco where in his four years at the helm, guided the Lions to the minor premiership in every year, achievingpremiership success in 2004 and 2006. Peter’s coaching experienceincludes coach of the Peel Thunder Football Club in 2002, AssistantCoach at West Coast 2000 and 2001, Assistant Coach/Reserves Coachat the Hawthorn Football Club in 1998 and 1999, and Senior Coach ofthe Burnie Dockers Football Club in the Tasmanian Football League from1995 to 1997. Peter is a Life Member of the North Melbourne FootballClub where he played 185 senior games from 1984 to 1994 as wellas 55 games in the Under 19s from 1981 to 1984. Peter representedVictoria on two occasions in 1991 and Tasmania on three occasions in1995, 1996 and 1997 when he was captain of the Tasmanian side thattook on WA. In 2006 Peter was the WAFL State Coach. How would you describe your first pre-seasonat Fremantle?Eye-opening. I’ve been out of AFL footballfor five years, and as much as you watch thegames, it has evolved massively in that time. The environment that’s been created in thelast few years at Fremantle has made it reallyenjoyable, and I think that the playing group areeven more responsive than I thought they’d be.You’ve been very successful as a coach acrossthree States. How much do you enjoy it?Well you enjoy it when you win premierships andwhen you’re winning 8 out of 10 games, but it canreally take a lot of the energy out of you at times. It’s demanding whether you’re an assistant coachat AFL level or a senior coach at WAFL level. But it’s what I know best... well, that and beinga curator at cricket and football grounds.Does it beat being a curator, which wassomething you did in your younger years? It does monetary-wise! But I wouldn’t changemy nine years that I was curator at Windy Hilland then Arden Street. It was fantastic times, being outdoors, and it kept you fit. I never toreany muscles in my whole career and I put thatdown to always being active as a curator. Were you as passionate about preparinga pitch for district cricket as you are preparinga football team?Oh definitely! I was a bowler so I used to liketo leave a bit of green in the wicket, but by thesame token you didn’t want a team bowled outfor 120. It’s all pride in your work, and if youwanted to have good wickets and the oval intip top shape you had to do the work and nottake short-cuts. So that was a great learningexperience for the rest of my life because it’sthe same in coaching – you can’t take shortcuts, you have to go the extra yard.Arden Street would have special memories foryou then, not just as a curator but as a playerwith North Melbourne too?Yeah I was there for 14 years and about300 games all up in the Under 19s, Reserves& Seniors. I first went down there at 15 yearsof age, and for three years I caught the traindown to the ground. One reason why I got mydrivers’ license so fast was because I was sickof that walk from the train station! I rememberone night I stayed back after training and thegrandstand caught on fire. I ended up gettinga hose out and helping to put it out! I canstill remember our last game at Arden Street– it was against Richmond, I played on MauriceRioli, I was the last North Melbourne player tokick a goal at the ground, and I got the threevotes in the Brownlow that day too!You played under some great coaches, including John Kennedy and Denis Pagan. How much of an influence did they have onyour coaching today?Yeah Denis was a major influence on me.He was a tough coach, but I’ve modelled myselfa fair bit on him. When I played under him in theUnder 19s he showed me the work ethic andmental toughness you needed to be a betterplayer at senior level. And as a senior coach hisrecord speaks for itself. I had Barry Cable onlyfor a couple of games in the seniors, but JohnKennedy was my coach for about five years, and he was terrific – a great motivator and agreat orator. The game probably caught up withhim (during his time at North), but having saidthat we won our fair share of games. I oftenfound myself later in life saying a lot of thingsthat I remember John saying to me.So after you retired from AFL football in 1994how did you end up at Burnie in Tasmania?I was only 29 at the time, and when I realisedthat my playing days at the top level were overI definitely wanted to coach. I had a lot of clubsring me up, but I thought Burnie presented mewith the best opportunity to cut my teeth incoaching. And I had the best of both worlds asa playing-coach – I was too young to retire fromplaying. The Tasmanian Football League, as itwas back then, was a really good competition, and Burnie had kept finishing fourth or fifthover the previous five years. I made some reallygreat friends down there, and after my secondyear the President got moved aside and I wasmade a full-time employee of the club. I had todo the lot – marketing, sponsorship, etc. Theclub turned around to be a real strong identityin the north-west of the State, and has won fiveof the last seven premierships in the NTFL, soI’m very proud of being a part of the transitionfrom underachievers to a club that would onlyexpect real success. You then moved to Hawthorn as ReservesCoach for two years, where one of yourcolleagues was Chris Connolly. Was itapparent back then that he was a seniorcoach in waiting?I always knew that Chris was going to be a verycapable senior coach. I often say that DenisPagan and Chris were the two people that hadthe biggest impact on my coaching. Chris openedup my mind to expand my coaching thoughts, with regards to training drills, preparation andso on. Most people only see Chris Connolly thecoach, but there’s a lot more to him than justthat, and coaching with him at Hawthorn I gotto see all of those qualities of him. When you moved to Perth at the end of 1999to join West Coast, did you imagine you andyour family would still be here over sevenyears later?Well to end up at Subiaco was the blessingof coming over here. I went to a club that hadbeen starved of premiership success, but werereally driven to achieve that goal, and to methat made it all worthwhile. And now to be hereat Fremantle, that’s really the icing on the cake. After two premierships and an 80% winningrecord at Subiaco was it hard to leavethe Lions?I’d been there for four years, so I had probablycome to the crossroads in my coaching. I hadto see if I was going to get another opportunityat AFL level, and if that wasn’t forthcomingI would have to either continue coaching inthe second tier or move into another streamof work. Fortunately the opportunity came upat Fremantle, and despite loving every minuteof my time at Subiaco, I’m excited about thechange and the move. How happy are you to be back in theAFL system?Well football wasn’t much of a priority after2001. The last year at West Coast was a prettylow time in my life, but the Subiaco job was thecatalyst for me to set my goal on getting backinto the AFL. And fortunately that’s how it allpanned out. Most Assistant Coaches have senior coachingaspirations – is it something you hope toachieve in the future?Yes. This is my 14th year of coaching, andI’ve experienced a lot of areas and coachedover 200 games of footy. So I like to thinkthat with a couple of good years at Fremantle,if an opportunity came up I’d be ready for it.But it’s all about timing. Timing is everything infootball, and it’s very important when it comesto coaching positions. But my main focus is toplay my part and do my role at Fremantle, andhopefully the better Fremantle does will help allthe Assistant Coaches here to put their nameup for senior jobs. What are your thoughts on the season ahead? It’s a big season for the club, and everyonearound here is looking forward to it more sothan any other season in Fremantle’s history. From a personal point of view, I don’t think toofar ahead – it’s all about getting the processesin place. But it’s just a great environment tobe in as an Assistant Coach because of howeverything’s structured around the club. And finally, is it true that you now rival ChrisConnolly and Cameron Schwab as the biggestfan of ’70s rock at the club? We’re probably on a par. Cameron and I arefairly similar, and Chris is a little bit more hardcore. But it’s comforting to know that you canput on an AC/DC song and there are peoplearound the club that will appreciate it!18 Docker April 2007 fremantlefc.com.au

Community CampFremantle’s Wheatbelt AdventureAs Fremantle’s pre-season training program reached its climax in early-February, the players, coaches andsupport staff headed to the Wheatbelt for the 2007 Telstra AFL Community Camp for three days from 6 February. The Camp commenced on Tuesday6 February, with the team setting off brightand early from Fremantle Oval for theircamp base at the El Caballo Resort. No sooner werethe bags unloaded than the players and coacheswere off to visit 15 schools from Northam toMerredin and Toodyay to Goomalling. For some of the team it was a return to their oldschools and to reminisce about their early schooldays. Justin Longmuir returned to visit CunderdinAgricultural School, Josh and Matthew Carrreturned to their old primary school Sacred Heartat Goomalling and Robert Haddrill caught up withhis old teachers at St Joseph’s Primary School in hishome town of Northam. The first day concluded with a Civic Receptionat the Northam Memorial Hall and the officialwelcome by Town of Northam Mayor Ray Head andShire of Northam President Burt Llewellyn.Day two began with a school leaders’ breakfastat the Northam Recreation Centre, where over 200students and teachers enjoyed breakfast with theplayers and the opportunity to get that treasuredphotograph or autograph. The players, coaches and staff were treated byEl Caballo Resort after lunch to a special display bythe famous Andalusian dancing horses and Spanishmaster-horseman Ramon Guerrero. The highlight of the three day camp came later thatafternoon with an Auskick Super Clinic at Jubilee Ovalattended by more than 400 local children followed bya team training session in front of the local supporterswhere the players put on a sharp display for the crowddespite the 40-plus temperature. While the teamtrained, a fantastic community BBQ was in full swingsupported by Fonterra with giveaways for the localsupporters while Telstra – Regional WA gave $500towards the running of the BBQ, with all proceedsgoing to the Northam Junior Football Association.Following training, Chief Executive OfficerCameron Schwab, Senior Coach Chris Connolly,General Manager Football Operations Robert Shaw,Assistant Coach Michael Broadbridge, togetherwith Paul Hasleby and Dean Solomon featured ina Sportsmans’ Night at the Northam Town Hall.Funds raised from the evening went towards thedevelopment of womens football in the region. The final day of the Camp saw the players visita further 12 schools in the region ranging fromWundowie to Koorda deep in the heart of theWheatbelt region, and from Calingiri to Beverley.Over 1,850 km were covered on day three takingthe tally for the entire trip to just over 4,500 km.Fortunately for the players and staff, they coveredthe great distances between destinations in theWheatbelt in the air-conditioned comfort of Mazdavehicles and were well-fed throughout the campwhile on the road by Subway, that did a sterling jobto supply over 200 footlong sandwiches to hungryplayers and staff throughout the camp. Thirsts in thehot conditions were quenched by almost 400 bottlesof Pump water and Powerade, generously suppliedby Coca-Cola Amatil (WA). And back at the resort, there was an endless supply of snacks, includingyoghurts and choc milks provided by Fonterra. The annual Community Camp is a fantasticopportunity for the club to meet it’s supporters inregional WA and despite the massive logisticalundertaking is one that the club, and especiallythe players, look forward to each year. The clubhas visited Bunbury, Geraldton, Pilbara and thePeel regions in previous years.38 Docker April 2007 fremantlefc.com.au
