6CLOUD 9; KENT, WACactus takes Unlimited DoublesBy Ty HughesCloud 9 hosted the UnlimitedDoubles Challenge last month onSaturday, December 11, 2010. RickClark signed up eight teams this timearound, which is down by a few teamsfrom normal, but there was somethingdifferent this time.This time there were two teamssponsored by Cactus Moon, and twomore sponsored by Dawsons. Of course,Cloud 9 is always well represented,with two teams shooting for Cloud 9,including the defending champions,Sam Resa and Peter Clark.This event is always a real crowdpleaser.The level of talent on theboards in this room is nothing shortof amazing, literally. These heavyweightslook forward to gatheringtogether every two months for thisspectacular affair where there will beno handicapping, just straight up dartcompetition all day long.We pick up the action as theyplay for 3rd or better. Sam and Peterare already out of the tournmament,giving up the ghost along with theirtrophy. Out the losers bracket, JohnHusman and David Foster, shooting forC9, handily wiped out Juan Ramos andMike Williams (Cactus Moon). Juanand Mike took a respectable 3rd place.Now, I've always wondered howJohn and David would do if they everteamed up... what a juggernaut! Nowthat David is a dreaded Southender(That's how the Northenders feelabout it too), living in the Kent area,it was only natural to team up withHusman for this one. Many onlookers,including myself, were very interestedto see this play out.As you know, each match is bestof 7, so these guys hunker down for areal barn-burner. Next on John andDavid's push toward the finishline is yetanother formidable team of virtual pros.Todd Jordan and Dave Bresee (CactusMoon), still unbeaten, dominated theafternoon and occupied the driver's seat.They had been sitting for a bit to see whothey'd be playing in the final match, andwere anxious to get started.I believe David Foster was on theoriginal championship team for theUnlimited Doubles Challenge Cup.Many years ago, I'm pretty certain itwas Lil' Jen who first initiated this cupSee Unlimited Doubles on next pageat 16716 Hwy. 99, Lynnwood on a Tuesdayfor darts and $2 drinks, a Thursdayfor $3 top shelf, and every othernight for good times! 10Cloud 9’s Mary Todd, Terry Hales, Ken Brainard, and Gerold Freeman hold the Hot Shot CupCLOUD 9; KENT, WAHot Shot CupBy Joseph MathiasOn this brisk November Saturdayafternoon I made my way downto Cloud 9 again to see Tacoma’sHome Plate team, Louise Jones, TraciLamirande, Carmen Sweatmen, andMark Grisham take on current HotShot Cup Champs, Cloud What?!Cloud 9! They would return with MaryTodd, Terry Hales, Ken Brainard, andGerold Freeman. Somebody importantput it so eloquently once; “Dance withthe one that brung ya”.Gerold kicked things off withfireworks to take out the first game,but Traci came right back to tie itup. And then it happened again thesame way!Suddenly Cloud 9 kicked it up anotch and took the next three games togain a 5-2 advantage. The next sevengames were pretty close to the sameas the first seven, except this timeHome Plate finished up on a 3-gamerun of their own to tie the match backup at 7.Beautiful Charissa did an awesomejob of making sure everyone’sglass was topped off and frothy.Cloud 9, unhappy with the momentumshift, was about to experiencea paradigm shift of their own and runoff with the next three games to regainthe lead at 10-7.Traci continued to shoot greatdarts and snagged game 18 to makeit 10-8, in Cloud 9’s favor.Gerold and Ken seemed to finda hot hand, winning the next two toextend Cloud’s lead 12-8. Mark hits aHat Trick in game 21, plus back-tobackouts from Louise and Carmen,the score was back to within twogames, 12-10, Cloud 9.Cloud came right back and wonthe next two to once again foster a4-game lead. Although Carmen wasjust finding her groove, winning thenext two, it just wasn’t enough. Cloud9 cruised through the next threegames to take the match, 17–12.What a great match!
