Trends | FiltrationScouting Out Trends, Developmentsand Unmet Needs in FiltrationBy Edward C. GregorFrom a list of priorities, marketintelligence is the most importantneed for American Filtration& Separations Society (AFS)Corporate Sponsors. This was learnedat the 2010 AFS Spring Conference inSan Antonio in late March. This articlefeatures a high-level overview and a fewspecific insights into the subject ofwhere the filtration and separationsmarket is today and where it is headed. The overview certainly is not all encompassing, but provides a brief summaryfor readers having an interest inthe subject.FILTRATION TRENDSThere are several fundamental characteristicsor macro-trends in the filtrationmarket. They include:• Finer Filtration is in demand prettymuch across the board asmanufacturers from automotive tosemiconductor manufacturing seekto increase product performance.• More filtration media is indevelopment for niche applicationsin the form of specializedmembranes, nano fibers, ceramicfibers or high-temperaturespunbond and meltblownnonwoven fabrics from specialtypolymers than were in the past.• Environmental consciousness isevolving as filter buyers are seekinglong-filter life and/or the eliminationof disposable filters using a systemsapproach.• One world manufacturing, distribution and sales. Ascommunications, markets andFiltration media for niche applications will be in demand in the coming years, including media such as filters made from ceramic fibers pictured above.currencies are more unified,multi-national filter customersexpect filtration products to beavailable locally from suppliers asthey install production overseas.• Legislation by local, regional andinternational bodies increasinglyenacting laws to prevent, reduce andclean-up contamination.Trends are long-term changes in the6 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.commarket, which often span many yearsacross the industry as a whole. Thereare other ongoing micro trends in nichemarkets that relate to the fundamentallonger-term trends listed above.LATEST DEVELOPMENTSIt’s important to understand the differencebetween the “tweaking” andenhancing a product design or function, and true new product development. There is no black and white

Trends | FiltrationMercury Removal Media: Mercury(Hg) reduction has been an enigma toregulators, the general public and producersof media and process facilitiesalike. Many materials and processes havebeen tried to solve this vexing problem. To date, the preferred materials have beenactivated carbon, but because of overallefficiency limitations along with reprocessingand waste disposal issues, usersand environmental regulators continue toseek improved solutions. Now, a newmedia and system reports success at 100percent efficiency in very large-scale naturalgas processes with the ability to concentratemercury and completelyeliminate media waste, regeneration andhazmat disposal. In time this technologylikely will be developed to work withcoal-fired power plants and cement factories, the two largest mercury emitters.Coalescing media has proven capabilities for removing oil from water and oilymist from air at levels heretofore not achievable by other media.definition, but mostly shades of gray. There are certain new developmentsand emerging technologies worth commentingon. The developments describedbelow revolve around filtrationmedia and new filter, equipment orprocess design.NEW FILTRATION MEDIAHEPA Media: Wetlaid glass filtrationmedia has been the preferred inHEPA air filtration in semiconductorcleanrooms, laboratories, surgical operatingtheaters, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and in the production ofLCD screens. Over the years, endusersat semiconductor manufacturingcompanies have sought an alternativemedia to glass to reduce off-gassingand wafer contamination. Alternativemedia such as PTFE membranes havebeen used, but the cost remains ashortcoming, limiting its use. Now, anew nonwoven filter media with extremelyfine polymeric fibers is increasinglycapturing a portion of themarket at a cost comparable to wetlaidglass media has dominated.8 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.comNanofibers and Nano Media: By lastcount there were over 30 companies eitherdeveloping or in commercial productionwith nanofiber or webs, yet fewwill ever achieve meaningful sales success.Too many media manufacturers areenthralled with the ability to makenanofiber materials without an understandingof the performance requirementsof the markets and customers. With that said there are suppliers whohave created winning constructions, primarilyfor air filtration. Only one companyhas fully commercialized ananofiber for liquid filtration, made froma combination of boehmite and glass, which works via electro-adsorbitive andion exchange properties, not mechanicalfiltration. A second company has productsin development from all commodityand specialty polymers, processableinto nanofiber in most nonwoven formatsfor air and liquid at substantiallygreater speed than electrospinning.ADVANCED FILTER CAPABILITIESCoalescing Separators: Coalescingmedia has traditionally used glass fiberand other materials such as E-CTFE fluoropolymernonwoven as the media ofchoice and state-of-the-art. For advancedseparations for challenging separations anew medium has emerged as a worthychallenger. The patented material consistsof a viscoelastic polymer, which is

Trends | Filtrationsaturated into polymeric filtration media or filters achievingseparations of oil and chemical suspensions as low as one micronin size. Examples of the ideal use for the technology aredifficult oil/water separations in produced and bilge water andstorm water applications. The same technology has proven capabilitiesfor removing oily mist from air at levels heretoforenot achievable by other media.High-capactiy pleated cartridge filters are capable ofusing a wide selection of filtration media, and are designedto have higher effective filtration surface area and dirtholding capacity.High-Capacity Pleated Cartridge: These commercial filtersare capable of using a wide selection of filtration media. The filters are designed to have significantly higher effectivefiltration surface area and dirt holding capacity than traditionalpleated filters of similar size for use where large quantitiesof liquid are processed. Specific market segments wherethe high-capacity filter has meaningful market share growthpotential, because of comparatively low cost and high dirthold capacity are: beer, wine and soft drink make-up waterprocessing, pulp and papers mills, RO prefilters, coolant andhydraulics filtration, swimming pool filters, coalescing filters, oil, gas, and chemical process filters; and for air: truck andoff-road vehicle engine in-take and gas turbine filters. Inshort, there are few applications where this patented filtercannot excel compared to incumbent filters.10 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.comPleated Ceramic Filters: Ceramic filtration materialsand products have traditionally held a micro portion of thefiltration market. Beyond wall-flow ceramic filters used indiesel exhaust filtration, ceramics have not gained a meaningfultoehold in the market in spite of their enormous potentialfor use in high-temperature and corrosion resistanceapplications. Now, wetlaid ceramic filter media with ceramicbinders fabricated into pleated filters are being sold. This patented technology reduces the cost of conventionalceramic filter systems and increases percent porosity withoutaffecting filter efficiency resulting in lower differentialpressure compared to well-established ceramic filter configurations. The filters are engineered for use in air or liquidapplications where polymeric and metal filters cannotwithstand challenging environments. Equally important, the filters are cleanable in-situ.UNMET NEEDSA number of unmet needs in the filtration market canbe seen, some of which potentially can be solved with indepthmarket research and an internal companyskunkworks devoted to basic and applied research in designingthe next big-think idea. To those who say, filtrationis a highly price-competitive market withouthigh-margin opportunities, one only has look at the profitabilityof membrane companies. Other high-margin examplesinclude precision woven wire cloth andmonofilament woven fabrics, neither of which are a bargain. As these examples demonstrate, customers clearlywill pay for performance. In the future, other new media

Trends | Filtrationand filters will gain market share fromcommodity materials and products as filtrationusers overall seek improved performance. The following is a list of unmetneeds the author believes provides additionalnew product developmentareas and opportunities for the future:• Air filters: Filters with high-MERVratings, which yield higher flowrates and lower pressure drop• Filter Aid Substitutes: Filter aids, such are diatomaceous earth, haveproven effective, but presentdisposal issues. We need alternativechoices for high-volume uses likebeer, wine and the processindustries in general.• Membranes: MF/UF and ROmembranes or substitute materialswith high efficiency possessinggreater flow rate, lower differentialpressure and energy requirements.• Neutralizing Media/Systems: Moreeffective catalytic or other mediacapable of rendering variouscontaminates, including toxicsubstances environmentallyfriendly. Cigarette and coal-firedpower generation filters may be themost challenging of all the needs, but would do wonders for humanity.• Nonwoven Fabric: A melt-spinnablenonwoven with vastly improvedfiber distribution properties and athree dimensional cross-section.• Power Generation: Baghouse filters, dust collection cartridges or otherdevices able to withstand greaterchemical resistance at substantiallyelevated temperatures.• Reusable Filters: New designconcepts for multiple use or betteryet, permanent filters, which reducethe need for disposable filterand waste.• RO/UF Membrane Support:Material capable of being moreconsistent, including theelimination of standing fibers anduneven thickness across the width.• Triboelectric Media: Wider use oftriboelectric media and from onematerial of construction. There is an ongoing need for greaterinnovation in filtration and separationas new developments has slowed in recentyears. As the economy improves, one can only hope more companies addincreased funding to R&D and productdevelopment. At the end of the day, thisis the lifeblood of any company manufacturingmaterials, component partsFNand filtration products.Edward C. Gregor, Edward C. Filter | SterilizationPoints for Validating Filter SterilizationBy Tonya Morris, Pharmaceutical Section Leader, Nelson Laboratories, Inc.that are generally used are steam, heat, ethylene oxide, and radiationsterilization. However, there are fewsterilization options for sterilizingpharmaceutical or biological products, which may be labile when exposedto heat, chemical treatment orradiation. One of the most commonoptions for sterilizing labile productsis filtration sterilization. Sterilizingsensitive pharmaceutical and biologicalproducts by filtration is becominga preferred method and the needs ofthe industry are increasing in parallelto the growth of the pharmaceuticalindustry. In September 2004, the U.S.Food and Drug Administration publisheda guideline recommending thatwhenever filtration is used in the productionprocess, validation procedureswill include microbial retentiontesting of the filters. These tests needto be conducted using simulatedpharmaceutical processing procedureswhich define “worst case” productionconditions. Parameters to be consideredinclude, but are not limited to:organism size, number of organisms, flow rate, temperature, pH, viscosity, and pressure.Sterilizing sensitive pharmaceutical andbiological products by filtration is becoming apreferred method and the needs of the industryare increasing in parallel to the growth of thepharmaceutical industry. The production of sterilepharmaceutical products andmedical devices usually encompassan approved, validated, andappropriate sterilization method. Themost common sterilization methods14 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.comThe FDA defines validation as:“Establishing documented evidencewhich provides a high degree of assurancethat a specific process will consistentlyproduce a product meeting itspre-determined specifications and qualityattributes.”Furthermore, both the FDA and theParenteral Drug Association (PDA)have concluded that when it comes tovalidation, it is the user’s responsibilityto demonstrate the complete microbialremoval from each product or productfamily using a representative challenge. In an attempt to help the user, points toconsider when developing a validationplan for filter sterilization by means offiltration are evaluated and summarizedin this article.SELECTING A STERILIZING GRADE FILTERThe accepted industry standard for

sterilizing grade 0.2 µm or 0.22 µm ratedfilters (0.2 and 0.22 are used interchangeablydepending on the manufacturer) isthe complete retention of Brevundimonasdiminuta ATCC #19146 at a concentrationof at least 1.0 x 107 organisms persquare centimeter (CFU/cm 2 ) of effectivefiltration area (EFA) using “worst case”processing conditions. Smaller pored filtersor filtering in series (a process commonin Europe) may also be employed toachieve complete retention. As the mechanism of retention inmembrane filters is not a sieving function, the chemical and physical propertiesof the product can have asignificant influence on the effectivenessof the filter. It is therefore essentialthat the product’s effect on theretention function is evaluated beforetraditional challenge testing. Filtercompatibility studies are required andthe chemical and physical propertiesof the product are evaluated prior todesign of the validation protocol.VALIDATING STERILE FILTRATIONThe Parenteral Drug Association(PDA) suggests in Technical Report 26that the user evaluate four different aspectsof their filtration process in orderto validate sterile filtration: Extractables/Leachables,Compatibility, Integritytesting, and Microbial Retention.Extractables/leachables: The PDATechnical Report 26 defines an extractableas “any chemical componentthat is removed from a material by theapplication of an artificial or exaggeratedforce” and a leachable as “a chemicalcomponent that migrates from acontact surface into a drug product orprocess fluid during storage or normaluse conditions.” During filtration, theprocess fluid is exposed to many componentssuch as the filter membrane, housing, o-rings, piping, etc., all ofwhich can contribute to extractablesentering the final product. It is essentialin the validation to determine theamount of extractables that mightenter the fluid stream. There are manyways to determine this, the most commonbeing the measurements of nonvolatileresidues. Other methodsinclude measuring total organic carbons(TOC), Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (FTIR), gaschromatography with mass spectroscopy(GC-MS), etc. Since the drugproduct may interfere with many ofthese tests, it is common to perform anextraction using a surrogate solution. The extraction can be performed usingstatic (soaking) or dynamic (movementof fluid through the filter) conditionswith special consideration forthe sterilization process, flushing procedures, contact time, temperaturesand chemical attributes of both thesystem and the process fluid.Compatibility: Testing for compatibilitycan be performed as a separatepart of the validation or as part of themicrobial retention. Validating thecompatibility of the filter and the entiresystem including hoses, o-rings,pumps, housings, core, etc., ensure thatthey can withstand the worst-case conditionsof the sterilization and productionprocesses. Filter | Sterilizationflow rates, examining physical aspectsof the membrane (shrinking orswelling of the membrane, discoloring, shredding, etc.).Integrity Testing: During validation, the user needs to assess the integrityof the filter and apparatus inorder to verify tight seals, installation, and the effects from sterilization andproduction. Another aspect to considerand validate is product-wet integritytesting. During manufacturing it is notalways feasible to perform a rinse priorto an integrity test; therefore, it becomesnecessary to validate the appropriateintegrity test method using theproduct. This can be assessed by comparingand calculating the integrity testresults using the filter manufacturesrecommended wetting agent and theend user’s product. During this process,it is recommended to perform multiplereplicates and/or multiple filter lots dueto variation within the membrane lots.Microbial Retention: The microbialretention test is performed using the industrystandard concentration of atleast 10 CFU/cm 2 of the effective filtrationarea. The typical challenge organismused is Brevundimonas diminutaATCC 19146. Other challenge organismsmay also be considered withsound justification and consultationwith the FDA. The microbial retentiontest is performed using worst case processingparameters and the goal is tovalidate that during these conditions asterile effluent is produced. Below aresome points to consider when developinga protocol for filtration sterilizationvalidation:Product Toxicity: The primary concernin the validation process is the affectof the product on the challengeorganism. Many products are designedto inhibit bacterial growth and mayeven have disinfectant properties.Other products intentionally incorporateantimicrobial ingredients and insome cases, bacterial toxicity may be aconsequence of a synergistic activity oftwo or more ingredients, or a by-productof various physical properties. To acertain extent, product toxicity can beanticipated. Where no overt toxicity isexpected after a review of the ingredientsand physical properties, a toxicitytest against the challenge organismshould be performed. If the toxicitycauses a two-log reduction or less, thechallenge titer can be adjusted up tocompensate. If the impact is greaterthan a two-log reduction, it is consideredbest practice to use a surrogatethat has similar properties to the ingredientsfound in the product. FDA guidancefor an appropriate surrogate ishighly recommended. If an appropriatesurrogate cannot be formulated, thenext best practice is the re-circulatingtechnique. In this case, the filter is exposedto the product using worst-caseprocess conditions and then the productis flushed out of the filter and apparatus, which are subsequently16 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.com

Filter | Sterilizationchallenged with the organism. Thismethod exposes the filter to the productunder worst-case conditions andthen challenges the filter under conditionswhere the challenge organism cansurvive. These same considerationsmust be addressed for assay filters usedin the validation testing as well. Theuser may also decide to use a surrogatefor the challenge portion of the recirculationtest. If the product andprocess is found to not be toxic, thenthe preferred method of directly inoculatingthe product should be used. Inthis case, the product is directly inoculatedwith an appropriate amount of thechallenge organism and the conditioningand challenge are performed concurrentlyusing worst case processingparameters.Surface Tension: The presence ofsurface active ingredients may interferewith the bacterial retention mechanismof the filter, especially if the bacteria aresmaller than the smallest pore in the filter.Recent research has shown thatsieving action may not be the primaryretention mechanism in membrane filtration.Any phenomenon that mightinterfere with other filtration mechanismsmust be considered in the validationprocess. The change in thebubble point for the filter by the drugproduct does not, by itself, indicate areduction in bacterial retention, butmight be an indicator of the presenceof surface-active ingredients.Pressure and Flow Rate: Scientificliterature confirms that pressure canhave an effect on bacterial retention.Log reduction values decreased as thepressure increased in research by Leahy. The FDA therefore recommends validationunder worst case processingconditions (i.e., highest differentialpressure) to demonstrate bacterial retention. In the traditional test system, the interconnecting tubing diameter issomewhat non-variable so that in scaledown procedures, pressure and flowrate become interdependent. We haveconstructed our test apparatus withoversized tubing in order to eliminateas well as possible any flow rate limiting. In most validations, rate of flowper filter surface area is adjusted tomatch that of the actual process. Werecommend validations at the highestflow rate on the assumption that theseconditions will also result in the highestpressure differential. The recordeddifferential pressure may be higher orlower than the actual process pressure.Temperature: From a bacterial challengeperspective, temperature canhave a significant effect on the viabilityand recoverability of the microorganismsselected for the challenge. Thechallenge organism (Brevundimonasdiminuta) has a relatively narrow temperaturerange for maintaining viability.Thermal shock to the challengeorganisms could reduce the recoveryprocess. A re-circulating test can beused in cases where the process temperaturedoes not permit the challengeorganisms to survive. The drug productis re-circulated through the filter at the18 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.comelevated temperature for the prescribedduration to simulate temperature exposure.Retention testing is then conductedon the filter and cooled down toa temperature which will preserve theorganism’s viability.Duration: It has been demonstratedthat bacteria can migrate through filtersin use for extended periods of time. While the mechanism for this migrationis not clear, it is suggested that filtrationprocesses do not exceed 24hours in length. Validations for longerprocesses usually involve proceduresfor replenishment of the challenge andinterim samples to ascertain bacterialbreakthrough.Filter Selection and Integrity Testing:The microbial retention is normallyperformed on at least threefilters, each from different manufacturinglots. It is recommended that at leastone of those filters be at or near the filtermanufacturer’s recommended minimumbubble point as the user is limitedto using filters that match or exceed thelowest bubble point in the validation.Normally the integrity test is performedbefore and after the microbial challenge. There should not be a significantchange in the integrity test results afterthe microbial challenge has takenplace. Significant changes in integritytest results before and after the microbialchallenge could indicate occlusion, swelling, caking, precipitate, etc.The test procedure/validation consistsof testing at least three filters fromdifferent manufacturing lots. Each testfilter is challenged with a suspension ofBrevundimonas diminuta ATCC#19146 that has been cultured to maximizethe percentage of organisms capableof passing through a typical 0.45µm filter. Sufficient volume of this challengesuspension, equivalent to at least1 x 107 CFU/cm 2 of effective filtrationarea (EFA) is prepared for each filter. The challenge is conducted at a highflow rate and/or at a maximum differentialpressure consistent with worst

case processing conditions. The effluentis collected and assayed quantitativelyby membrane filtration. Integritytesting is performed before and afterthe bacterial challenge procedure. Theselection of Brevundimonas diminutaas the challenge organism is based onliterature reports that the organism attainsa very small size when grownunder stress or minimal nutritionalconditions. The test procedure compliesin intent and content with theASTM F838-83 Standard Test Method“Determining Bacterial Retention ofMembrane Filters Utilized For LiquidFiltration” and the Health IndustryManufacturers Association (HIMA)Test Method “Microbiological Evaluationof Filters For Sterilizing Liquids”.Saline lactose broth is selected as thegrowth media because the literature reportsthat use of this media in concertwith carefully controlled growth conditions, results in a minimally aggregatedpopulation of Brevundimonas diminutacells, a significant percentage of whichwill pass through 0.45 µm membranes. The test objective of a most severe bacterialchallenge to the filter is met bythe challenge conditions, which includehigh pressure, high flow ratesand a high bacterial concentration percm 2 of effective filtration area. Thegrowth parameters, temperatures andmedia are adapted from the ASTM andHIMA methods.INOCULATED PRODUCT CHALLENGEWhen no deleterious effects fromthe product are revealed in the toxicitystudy, the organism is suspended directlyin the product to a concentrationresulting in greater than 1 x 107(CFU/cm 2 ) of effective filtration area. Asample of the challenge suspension istaken for titer and the test filters arechallenged at worst case conditions. The filtrate is collected and the totalvolume assayed by membrane filtrationto quantitate any passage of the challengeorganism through the test filter.Integrity testing (forward air diffusionand bubble point) is performed on eachfilter before and after the challenge.RE-CIRCULATING TECHNIQUEWhen toxicity or physical incompatibilitiesdirect, the product is re-circulatedthrough the test filters by peristalticpump for the duration of theprocess time. The filter and test apparatusare flushed with an appropriatesolvent to remove any residual productand the filter is challenged withthe organism at greater than 1 x 107per cm 2 of effective filtration area insaline lactose broth. The filtrate is collectedand assayed to quantitate anypassage of the challenge organismthrough the test filter. Integrity testing(forward air diffusion and bubblepoint) is performed on each filter beforeand after the challenge.CONTROLThe ability of a significant numberof organisms from the test challengesuspension to pass through a 0.45µmmembrane constitutes the positive control. It is verified concurrently withtesting by challenging a “standard”0.45 µm membrane with an aliquot ofthe challenge suspension.CONCLUSIONAlthough manufacturing a sterilewww.filtnews.com • August 2010 • 19product that is labile when exposedto heat, chemicals, and radiation, offersseveral challenges, filtration sterilizationis an industry-acceptedalternative. With careful considerationof manufacturing and productneeds, a validation plan may be developedby the product manufacturerwith help from an independent laboratoryor filter manufacturer. It is alsoimportant to remember that it is theuser (pharmaceutical or biologicalmanufacturer) that bears the responsibilityfor validating its filtrationsterilization process, which may include, not only microbial retentionbut also compatibility, extractables/leachables,and integrity testing. It is recommended to consult with anFDA reviewer when developing a validationplan. It may also be helpful toconsult with an independent contractlaboratory that performs filtrationsterilization validations.FNFor more information contact Nelson Labs:Tel: 1-801-290-7500 Fax: 1-801-290-7998Website: www.nelsonlabs.com

Testing | GAEDGAED Reveals PerformanceDifferences in POU SorbentHenry Nowicki, H. George Nowicki, Wayne Schuliger and Barbara ShermanGravimetric Adsorption EnergyDistribution (GAED)full characterizations 1,2 wereused to compare activated carbon filtersfrom two commercially sold point-ofuse(POU) vendor devices. GAED providesthe most precise and accurate testmethod, and less expensive, to evaluatesorbents which work on the physicaladsorption phenomenon. In this mechanism-of-actionadsorbate(s) molecule(s)are accumulated from anaqueous or air stream in nano-sized adsorptionspaces, but the molecules arenot chemically changed. GAED is anadvanced test method, which providescritical sorbent information not obtainablewith classical standard methods.GAED provides low cost critical informationfor sorbent users and manufacturerscompared to classical methods. The sorbent media is the heart of aPOU device, because it removes the targetedcontaminants. The most noticeablebenefit to the typical POU user isthe aesthetic removal of chlorine tasteand odor (T&O). Activated carboneliminates hypochlorous acid T&O byreducing it to chloride ions, which haveno T&O at low concentrations. Typicallyactivated carbon’s T&O reducingcapacity is higher than its trace organiccontaminant capacity. More likely thannot trace organic contaminants do nothave T&O. This is why the POU filterneed s to be replaced while it still providesT&O removal. This article compares POU sorbentsfor trace organic aqueous removalsusing GAED.GAED SAMPLE PREPARATIONFive POU devices containing activatedcarbon were tested by GAED toreveal differences in their aqueous tar-20 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.com

get organic compound removal performancedifferences. Four of the sampleswere carbon blocks and the fifthwas a granular activated carbon (GAC)containing ion exchange material. Thesorbent materials were removed fromeach POU device. Blocks were analyzedas broken chunks. Removed materialwas dried in an oven at 110˚C for threehours to remove water. A low dryingtemperature was used to avoid sorbentdamage and typically drying is done at150˚C. It is important to compare differentsorbents performance on a dryweight basis.During GAED sample preparationall five samples lost less than 2% moistureby weight. This indicates that allfive samples were clean and dry. Thisconditioning step allows the GAED tocalculate all activities and adsorptioncapacities on a clean carbon basis.GAED SAMPLE RUNSAfter each sample was cleaned andweighed, it was challenged with flowingadsorbent gas 1,1,1, 2-tetraflouroethane(TFE). When physical adsorption occursTFE gas is liquefied to a liquid likestate by graphitic London adsorptionforces. The TFE adsorbed weight increasesas the sample temperature is decreased, and decreases as the sampletemperature is increased. The mass adsorbedwas plotted against temperature, but the relative pressure was also changing. There are three variables affectingadsorption performance that changefrom point to point: vapor pressure, partial pressure, and temperature. The GAED samples and standardruns measured between 273 and 340quasi-equilibrium adsorption and desorptiondata points covering seven ordersof magnitude in relative pressure(isothermal basis) and three orders ofmagnitude in carbon loading. The massadsorbed on each of the nine specimenswas also divided by the carbon mass toprovide a weight percent loading foreasier comparisons.GAED CHARACTERISTIC CURVESThe tabular data and characteristiccurves are shown in Table 1 and Figure1. The 273 to 340 adsorption/desorptiondata points per run were interpolatedto get 30 evenly spaced pointscovering the entire temperature range.Next the adsorption and desorption resultswere averaged to get the quasiequilibriumvalues in Table 1. Thedifference between adsorption and desorptionwas minimal for all nine runs, thus demonstrating no carbon hysteresisas expected. The y-axis in Figure 1 are pore volumemeasured in cubic centimeter (cc)TFE liquid adsorbed /100 grams carbon, instead of a weight percent. Theadsorbed TFE weighs were divided byits bulk density, to convert a w/w basisto a v/w basis, for easier comparisons.PERFORMANCE PREDICTIONSFigure 1 characteristic curves arethe only carbon related informationrequired to predict physical adsorptionperformance using the Polanyi AdsorptionPotential theory 3 . Isotherms provide a“GO” or “NO GO” decision for a carbonapplication by indicating if the contaminantultimate equilibrium loading capacityis high enough to be cost-effective.Also GAED isotherms provide comparisonof the different carbon samples relativeperformances and the amount ofcarbon needed for an application.Other testing shows that in the aqueousadsorption isotherms for methyl-tertiarybutylether (MTBE), the benzeneisotherms, and the phenol isotherms inwater at pH ≤ 7; MTBE is weakly adsorbed, benzene more strongly adsorbed, and phenol is the most strongly adsorbedof the three compounds on carbon. These three compounds cover the absorptivityrange on carbon. The GAEDmethod enables other compounds adsorptionperformance to be calculatedusing the Polanyi Characteristic Polynomial.GAED can provide vapor-phaseisotherms as well as aqueous-phaseisotherms presented here.Isotherms for four standard carbonsare also presented in GAED reporting. Some benchmarks are Coal-Wood- andCoconut-based commercial carbon samples. It is important to run known standardcarbons with each batch of samplesto assure the analytical process is withinits statistical control limits. Running standardsalso provides a way to comparesamples to benchmark carbon products. The GAED allows other compoundsof interest to be compared for the samplesand carbon standards. This is illustratedfor 1,1,1-trichloroethane atype V carbon application. All of theapplications can be put into six types.Type V is a trace contaminant groundwater pump-and-treat application. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane performance on the ninecarbons are shown using bar graphs. Samples Z 261thru Z-264 were provided bythe project sponsor Aquamira Technologies. However, the total adsorptionpore volume, BET surface area and iodinenumbers are best for Z-265 asshown in Table 2. The BET surface areaand total pore volume correlate with theiodine number, so sample Z-265 wouldhave the highest iodine number. The adsorptionpotential energy and pore volumedistributions presented in Table 1provide the total pore volumes at adsorptionpotential and high energy porevolumes at cumulative adsorption potentials20 thru 29 cal/cc.The reason for this apparent performancediscrepancy between ASTMand GAED test results is the relative volumeof high adsorption energy pore volumesin the five samples. If only classicaltesting: BET surface area and iodinenumber were used the wrong carbonwould be chosen for trace organic removalbecause they only show the totalloading capacities. By also using GAEDit revealed the best vendors carbon fortrace aqueous organic removal applicationsbecause the high energy pore volumesare determined in addition to thetotal pore volumes. In trace contaminantapplications only the high energy bindingsites are used, which is a small partof the total pore volume.Aquamira Technologies provided thefirst four samples in the GAED tests. Thebest carbons have the higher adsorptionenergy binding sites. Aquamira sampleswere the best performing samples by afactor of 27. This relative performance isbased on equal weight of both sorbents. From a user viewpoint the best carbonwould last 27 times longer than the relativelypoor performer. It is important to use GAED advancedtesting methods as a second opinion. Werecommend using ASTM, AWWA tests, and GAED to solve problems. GAED canhelp solve real-world problems not solvableonly with standard methods asdemonstrated here. GAED provides alow cost way to obtain isotherms withbetter analytical precision.Prior testing of carbon blocks withGAED has demonstrated that granularactivated carbon particles combined withwww.filtnews.com • August 2010 • 23

We have previouslydemonstrated that it is possible to separateGAC particles touching the binderfrom free particles trapped in the blockand run the particles on GAED to determinethe lost pore volume over the adsorptionenergy range.GAED example reports are availableat www.pacslabs.com. Note that thesereports provide more information thanpresented in this article due to spacelimitations. Some additional informationare: GAED provides temperaturevs. loading capacities, BET surface area, pore diameters, differential adsorptioncurves, trace- and mid- capacity data, arange of other compound adsorptivities, and a quick market survey for newsorbent types of possible applications.CONCLUSIONMany applications 2 for GAED testingare available. Recently GAED was used toreveal the carbon filters that would be bestto replace a municipal drinking waterplant 4 that uses parallel GAC absorbentsto provide a blended water supply.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe authors credit Dennis B. Association | NewsWhitehouse Scientific to Sponsor 2010Filtration Society Conference on Filter TestingDr. Graham Rideal (middle) along with Chester’s Town Criers are ready for theFiltration Society meeting in October.54 • August 2010 • www.filtnews.comWhitehouse Scientific willbe a leading sponsor forthe Filtration Society’sannual conference and exhibition, which this year covers, filter testing. The conference will take place on October13, 2010 in Chester, U.K., and bypopular demand, the main one-dayevent will be preceded by a shortcourse and workshop. The Filtration Society’s conferencesalways attract world leaders in theirfield. Keynote speakers are ProfessorRichard Wakeman (Short Course),Mark Crooks (TSI) and Dr. ChristophePeuchot (IFTS, France) for the mainconference. A full technical programwill be published on the society’s website:www.filtsoc.org.This year’s short course will introducethe fundamental principles of filtertesting. Understanding particlesizing methods, and the informationthey produce, is integral to nearly allfiltration processes. The course aims tofirst establish the generic filter mostsuitable for a given application, beforediscussing performance tests, such asporosity, pore size, dirt holding capacityand integrity testing. It will cover theneed for testing; differentiating betweenmedia testing and filter systemtesting in both wet and dry applications;fundamental mechanisms of filtration;and the classification of filtermedia. Most importantly, the selectioncriteria for a filtration process will bediscussed – a topical subject because somuch money can be lost by using inappropriatefilter systems.Throughout the course of the day, allthe themes highlighted in the introductorysession will be developed andexemplified. These discussions will culminatewith a review of the wide arrayof international standards that apply inthe filtration industry. Participants willalso have hands-on access to a range ofleading testing equipment for close inspection. An accompanying trade exhibition, focusing entirely on filter media andtesting equipment, will feature a miniposter session for each exhibitor. Oneof the most popular sessions allows exhibitorsto describe key features of theirinstruments in a 5 minute “technologyburst.” This format generates a realbuzz in both the lecture theater and inthe exhibition hall afterwards.Based in historic Chester, conferenceparticipants will be well placed to investigatethe beautiful medieval citycenter. With a complete circle ofRoman walls, an amphitheatre and astunning cathedral, Chester is one ofthe most popular tourist destinations inthe UK. Formed in London in 1964, theFiltration Society is a charitable organizationand has equally strong linkswith industry and academia. Its objectivesare to promote research and development, and transfer existingtechnologies into new areas in the fieldof filtration and separation.Whitehouse Scientific has been producingcalibration microspheres formore than 25 years. Founder and managingdirector Dr. Graham Rideal is apast chairman of The Filtration Society, and is now active as its ScienceCorrespondent. He is a member of theEditorial Advisory Board for <strong>International</strong>Filtration News magazine in theUnited States.ABOUT WHITEHOUSE SCIENTIFICWhitehouse Scientific is a leading producerof glass microspheres for calibrationand is the highest-ranking Europeancertification laboratory for primary methodsof particle size analysis. The company’sstandards cover all particle-sizingtechniques including laser diffraction,Coulter methods, optical sizing, sieve calibrationand image analysis.
