At the leading edge ofpropulsion technologyPropellers/reduction gearsUnlike other propulsor suppliers,Rolls-Royce has its own marinepropulsion laboratory in Kristinehamn,Sweden, equipped with twocavitation tunnels. A conventionalclosed recirculating cavitation tunnelis used for testing propellers in "openwater" (i.e. not influenced by the hull)and behind the hull condition. Thistunnel offers maximum flexibility forvarious propeller/ship afterbody tests. One of the few free-surface typetunnels in existence, the second tunnelis used for testing high speedpropellers operating in partially orfully submerged conditions, in parallelor oblique flow. Transverse andvertical forces can be measured inaddition to thrust and torque, using asix-component dynamometer. In the quest for optimum propulsionefficiency with minimum noise andvibration, Rolls-Royce engineersemploy advanced theories andcalculation methods. Since thelaboratory first opened in 1942, about1.200 models of sub-, semi-, andsupercavitating propellers have beentested.High skewConventionalWake field behind after-bodyAll propulsion products are delivered withremote control systems. The electroniccontrol systems are undergoingcontinuous improvements to meet alltechnical and ergonomical demands.By skewing the blades, noise and vibrations can be reduced to a minimum.3This document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net

Kamewa Ulstein controllablepitch propellers, XF5 DThe XF5 D system is recognised as themost efficient of its type on the markettoday. The hub/propeller ratio hasbeen optimised for maximumefficiency and the blade bearingarrangement modified to avoid peakpressures. This has resulted inimproved stress distribution.Combined with increased pitch, thisensures greater strength andmaximum propeller efficiency. Thesystem can be supplied with four orfive blades of highly skewed or4moderate skew type, conventional ornozzle design. There are two types of KamewaUlstein CPP systems – type F andtype M.Type F: The oil distribution box ismounted on the forward end of thereduction gearbox. Ulstein Aquamaster azimuthing swing-up thrustersThis thruster swings up into ahousing in the hull when not in use.It can quickly be swung down abouta horizontal axis into the operatingposition. In operation, it functions asan azimuth thruster and is designedto develop maximum bollard pull inthe manoeuvring condition, or toprovide positioning power forstation keeping. The thruster has theadded safety benefit of functioningas a «get you home» drive. A highthrust is developed in relation toinput power, and this thrust can bevectored in any desired direction. In the stowed position the thrusterdoes not protrude below the vessel’skeel/baseline, an important considerationfor shallow water operations.Additional azimuth thrusters areoften located at the lowest possibleposition in the hull due to spaceenvelope restrictions, especially forequipment mounted at the bow, andthrusters need to be retracted intothe hull when not in use.Key features:• Can be delivered as containerisedunit• Available in CP and FP propeller• Electric or diesel drive• Remote control systemThis thruster unit is used in both swing-up and combi version.Typicalapplications:Suitable for:• tankers• cargo vessels• cruise ships/ferries• artic vessels• drilling rigs• various types of navalsupport vesselsThe swing-up principle.13This document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net

Mermaid – azimuthingpodded propulsorThe Mermaid pod propulsion systemcombines the expertise of Rolls-Roycein propulsion, hydrodynamics andazimuthing thrusters with theexperience of Alstom in electricpropulsion drives. In addition to theflexibility in machinery and vesselarrangement offered by electricpropulsion drives, the Mermaidsystem gives improved efficiency andexcellent manoeuvrability. The Mermaid outboard part is 360degrees rotatable for manoeuvringpurposes, or +/- 35 degreeshardover/hardover in transit, by themeans of a hydraulically operatingsteering gear. The main component inthe underwater unit is the electricmotor, in this case of synchronoustype with brushless excitation andwith a stator shrink fit in the podhousing. The motor is equipped withdouble windings in order to permit acontinuous operation > 50% load, even in case of winding failure. Thereis also a shaft brake, locking deviceand equipment to slowly turn theshaft in order to assist when undertakingmaintenance work. The propeller is of fixed pitchKamewa HS-type characterised bylow noise and vibration, and can beeither delivered with separatelybolted blades or cast as a completemonobloc. A feature with separatelybolted blades is that these can bechanged more easily in case ofdamage, one by one.18All seals against seawater are ofenvironmentally friendly type, i.e. aseal failure will not create any oil spillinto the water.Owner/Operator benefits:• Increased cargo capacity or reducedvessel size• Increased propulsion systemefficiency• Increased propulsion systemredundancy and power availability• Reduced total installed powergeneration• Reduced total fuel consumption &exhaust emissions• Reduced maintenance and repair• Reduced noise & vibration levels• Reduced vessel turning circleShipyard & Construction benefits:• Flexible machinery arrangement• Modularised design• Simpler vessel machineryinstallation• Simpler hull form and structure• Reduced installation time and cost• Fewer components• Reduced shipyard/sub-supplierco-ordination workThis document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net

Typicalapplications:Suitable for:• offshore rigs• tankers• cruise ships• Ro-Ro ferries• naval shipsThe Mermaid pod propulsionsystem is available from 5-25 MW.Mermaid is a space-saving and cost-efficient propulsion system.Electrical PodMermaid can be mounted and serviced without dry-docking.19This document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net

Kamewa waterjetsForward propulsionZero speedReversingSteering portSteering starboardThe ability to accelerate, reverse, stopand steer is excellent compared topropeller propulsion.Superior performanceand manoeuvrabilityThe water jet has many advantagesover a propeller. Kamewa waterjetshave a very high pump efficiency. Thisprovides higher speeds with the samepower, or, substantially lower fuelconsumption at a constant speed andlower power. At constant rpm, Kamewa waterjetsabsorb approximately the same powerregardless of the ship’s speed. Theengine cannot be overloaded, whichmeans fewer breakdowns and anincreased life cycle.Waterjets produce less vibration andnoise than propellers. At speeds over20 knots, the vibration and noise canbe reduced by more than 50 percent. In addition, with two or more waterjets, manoeuvrability is excellent, making quick dockings with perfectprecision standard every time. The impeller’s rotation is neverreversed, so no reversible gearbox isneeded for this action. The impeller’s task is to pressurise thewater. The reaction force that iscreated when the water leaves thepump is utilised to propel the ship.20This document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net

Kamewa mixed-flowwaterjets,S-and A-seriesS-seriesWaterjets S-seriesThe Kamewa S-series of waterjets isdeveloped for the largest and mostdemanding applications. The waterjetsare equipped with a mixed-flow pumpfor maximum efficiency. To facilitatethe hydrodynamic performance of thepump the built in bearings keep theimpeller in correct position and providecontrol of the important tip-clearance.The outboard bearing position alsosimplifies the overall load distributionin the aftship and leads to efficient useof the inlet duct as load carryingstructure. The S-series have five impeller bladeangles, eight pump outlet nozzle and atleast 10 variations of inlet duct designsare utilised to optimise the unit for eachapplication. Minimal and simple cableinstallation is achieved throughcomputerised databus-based systemfor steering and reversing control, which can be used for both manual andjoystick manoeuvring. The systemprovides redundancy and real-timeTypical applications:S-seriesSuitable for larger high speedcraft such as:• passenger/car ferries• larger naval vessels• excellent for bothmonohulls and multihullsA-seriesSuitable for:• smaller passenger ferries• rescue boats• smaller high speed navalcraftcontrol with a very high level ofsecurity. The Kamewa S-series aremanufactured entirely in stainless steelfor maximum wear and corrosionresistance.Waterjets A-seriesKamewa A-series is the first and onlyaluminium waterjet series in the worldwith mixed-flow pump technology.A-seriesDue to the utilisation ofthe mixed-flow pumps, hydrodynamicallyoptimised design andexacting production techniques, theA-series has 5-10% higher efficiencythan competing aluminium axial flowwaterjets. The impeller shaft and steering-/reversing rods are made of stainlesssteel. All other components are made oflight aluminium. The impeller housingis lined with polyurethane or stainlesssteel depending on the application’soperational profile. A water-lubricatedcutless bearing is used for ease ofservice and maintenance. All S- and A-series waterjets can besupplied as booster unit with oursteering and reversing gear.Main dataWaterjet S-seriesKamewa A40Kamewa A45Kamewa A50Kamewa A56Kamewa 63SKamewa 71SKamewa 80SKamewa 90SKamewa 100SKamewa 112SKamewa 125SKamewa 140SKamewa 160SKamewa 180SKamewa 200SKamewa VLWJPower range, kW0 2000 4000 6000 8000 10000 12000 14000 16000 18000 20000 22000 24000 26000On customer’s request size 40-56 waterjets can also be delivered in stainless steel.Waterjets21This document, and more, is available for download at Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net
