CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY<br />

above, receive the highest rating by the members <strong>of</strong> the Committee<br />

on Honor Students. This rating will be based upon:<br />

(a) Accomplishment in scholastic subj ects, and grades received<br />

in the comprehensive examinations given to "high honor"<br />

students at the end <strong>of</strong> the second term <strong>of</strong> the junior year.<br />

(b) Research and other creative ability as rated by instructors<br />

who have had contact on this side.<br />

(c) Power <strong>of</strong> clear, forceful expression (oral and written),<br />

as rated by instructors who have had contact on this side.<br />

(d) Acquaintance with European geography, politics, social<br />

problems, and recent history, with art and nature, with German<br />

and French, and other knowledge conducive to the success <strong>of</strong> a<br />

European trip as rated by Dean Macarthur on the basis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

seminar on "Europe" which he conducts during the fall and winter<br />

terms.<br />

(e) 'Student activities, physical development, health, as rated<br />

at the end <strong>of</strong> the sophomore year (items d and g <strong>of</strong> that rating).<br />

(f) Personal qualities as rated by fellow students at the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the sophomore year (item b <strong>of</strong> that rating).<br />

(g) Personal qualities conducive to fullness <strong>of</strong> life and success<br />

in a scientific or engineering career, as rated by the Honor<br />

Student Committee and instructors who have had close contact.<br />

THE CONGER PEACE PRIZE<br />

Everett L. Conger, D.D., for the promotion <strong>of</strong> interest in the<br />

movement toward universal peace and for the furtherance <strong>of</strong><br />

public speaking, established in 1912 the Conger Peace Prize.<br />

The income from one thousand dollars is given annually as a<br />

prize for the composition and delivery in public <strong>of</strong> the best essay<br />

on some subject related to the peace <strong>of</strong> the world. The general<br />

preparation for the contest is made under the direction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> English.<br />

SCHOLARSHIP AID FOR HONOR STUDENTS<br />

In addition to the prize scholarships described above, certain<br />

scholarship funds, limited in amoant, are available for students<br />

in honor standing whose financial resources might etherwise<br />

prevent them from continuing at the <strong>Institute</strong>. Any such students<br />

are requested to consult the Deans.
