CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY<br />
Mr. Raphael Herman, <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles, has provided a like sum<br />
to establish the Raphael Herman Loan Fund, which may be used<br />
for loans or for scholarships at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
Additional gifts <strong>of</strong> $5,000 and $1,000 have been made by anonymous<br />
donors for the same general purpose.<br />
Applications for loans may be made to the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
THE PUBLIC WORKS FUND<br />
Mr. William Thum, <strong>of</strong> Pasadena, has established a fund known<br />
as the Public Works Scholarship Fund, thereby making provision<br />
for the employment <strong>of</strong> a limited number <strong>of</strong> students in the various<br />
departments <strong>of</strong> municipal work. Under the provisions <strong>of</strong><br />
this Fund, students approved by the faculty are employed in the<br />
Municipal Lighting Department, and other departments <strong>of</strong> the<br />
city <strong>of</strong> Pasadena, thereby gaining valuable practical experience.<br />
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong> endeavors to be <strong>of</strong> assistance in aiding students<br />
to find suitable employment when it is necessary for them thus<br />
to supplement their incomes in order to continue their education.<br />
The requirements <strong>of</strong> the courses at the <strong>Institute</strong> are so exacting,<br />
however, that under ordinary circumstances students who are<br />
entirely or largely self-supporting should not expect to complete<br />
a regular course satisfactorily in the usual time. Students wishing<br />
employment are advised to write to the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> Y. M. C. A. in advance <strong>of</strong> their coming to the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
DORMITORY<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong> has provided on the campus one dormitory, <strong>of</strong><br />
frame construction, two stories in height, with rooms for about<br />
sixty students. Several <strong>of</strong> the rooms have sleeping porches, and<br />
there are attractive living and recreation rooms. Accommodations<br />
in the dormitory are limited to first-year students, and students<br />
entering the <strong>Institute</strong> are expected to live in the dormitory dur-
