CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY<br />

The Associated Students exercise general direction <strong>of</strong> matters<br />

<strong>of</strong> undergraduate concern in cooperation with the faculty.<br />

Athletic contests are managed by the Athletic Council, composed<br />

<strong>of</strong> faculty and student represcntatives. The student body,<br />

through its elected representatives, manages THE CALIFORNIA<br />

TECH, a weekly paper, and the BIG T, the annual. A glee<br />

club, an orchestra, and a band are maintained, with assistance<br />

from the <strong>Institute</strong>. There are at the <strong>Institute</strong> student branches<br />

<strong>of</strong> the American <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Electrical Engineers, the American<br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society <strong>of</strong><br />

Civil Engineers. A Chemists' Club and a Geology Club include<br />

men interested in these particular fields. Other organizations<br />

are the Dramatic Club, the Economics Club, the Press Club, the<br />

Radio Club, and the Aeronautics Club.<br />

The Astronomy and Physics Club, while composed <strong>of</strong> members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the faculty, graduate students <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>, and<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the staffs <strong>of</strong> neighboring scientific institutions,<br />

admits to its meetings undergraduate students who may be interested<br />

in its discussions.<br />

Sigma Xi is represented at the <strong>Institute</strong> by an active chapter.<br />

Graduate students who have demonstrated their ability to prosecute<br />

research are eligible for membership. Undergraduate students<br />

who have shown particular interest and aptitude in research<br />

are elected to associate membership.<br />

A chapter <strong>of</strong> Tau Beta Pi, the national scholarship honor<br />

society <strong>of</strong> engineering colleges, is maintained at the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

Elections are made each year from the highest eighth <strong>of</strong> the<br />

junior class, and from the highest quarter <strong>of</strong> the senior class.<br />

A chapter <strong>of</strong> Pi Kappa Delta, national forensic honor society,<br />

elects to membership students who have represented the <strong>Institute</strong><br />

in intercollegiate debate, oratorical or extempore speaking contests.<br />

At the national conventions held every even-numbered<br />

year, the <strong>Institute</strong> speakers have an opportunity to compete for
