DABNEY HALL OF THE HUMANITIES<br />
Through the generous gift <strong>of</strong> Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Dabney,<br />
a Hall <strong>of</strong> the Humanities was completed in September, 1928. It<br />
is a three-story building, located to the east <strong>of</strong> the Gates Chemical<br />
Laboratory, with its main entrance facing the plaza. The building<br />
contains provision for various undergraduate activities, lecture<br />
rooms, a treasure room for the exhibition <strong>of</strong> pictures and<br />
other works <strong>of</strong> art, a library-reading room, conference rooms and<br />
studies, and in the east wing a very attractive lounge, on the<br />
- north side _ <strong>of</strong> which a series <strong>of</strong> windows open out upon a tiled<br />
patio and an ornamental garden.<br />
CULBERTSON HALL<br />
Culbertson Hall, a beautiful auditorium seating 500 persons,<br />
erected in 1922, provides facilities for the <strong>Institute</strong> assemblies,<br />
lectures, and concerts, as well as for various social functions both<br />
<strong>of</strong> sil;udents and faculty. It was named in honor <strong>of</strong> the late<br />
Mr. James A. Culbertson, who was a trustee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> and<br />
Vice-President <strong>of</strong> the Board during the years 1908 to 1915.<br />
SEISMOLOGICAL RESEARCH LABORATORY<br />
The Seismological Research Laboratory is located on a site<br />
west <strong>of</strong> the Arroyo Seco. In it are carried on studies on earth<br />
movements. The general program <strong>of</strong> research is outlined by the<br />
Committee on Seismology <strong>of</strong> the Carnegie Institution <strong>of</strong> Washington'<br />
<strong>of</strong> which Dr. Arthur L. Day, director <strong>of</strong> its Geophysical<br />
Laboratory, is chairman. Mr. Harry O. Wood is in immediate<br />
charge <strong>of</strong> the investigations; and with him cooperate Dr. J. A.<br />
Anderson, <strong>of</strong> the Mt. Wilson Observatory, and Pr<strong>of</strong>. John P.<br />
Buwalda, <strong>of</strong> the geological department <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

OF THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES<br />
The first building <strong>of</strong> the William G. Kerckh<strong>of</strong>l' Laboratories<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Biological Sciences, the present quarters <strong>of</strong> the department,<br />
