west, and is two storics in height. It contains a lecture room,<br />
seating 150 and completely equipped for chemical demonstrations<br />
<strong>of</strong> all sorts; a scminar room, a chemistry library, a small lecture<br />
room seating about so peoplc, class rooms, four research laboratories,<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essors' studies, a storeroom for inflammable chemicals,<br />
and the usual machinery, switchboard, and service rooms. The<br />
architects for this unit were thc Bertram G. Goodhue Associates,<br />
with Clarcnce S. Stein.<br />
RESEARCH LABORATORY OF APPLIED CHEMISTRY<br />
With the Gates Chemical Laboratory is associated the Research<br />
Laboratory <strong>of</strong> Applied Chemistry, which is located in the<br />
new Engineering Research Building. This research laboratory<br />
is equipped for carrying on chemical reactions on a fifty or a<br />
hundred pound scale. The machinery is as nearly like commercial<br />
plant equipment as is consistent with its size. It includes<br />
apparatus for grinding and pulverizing, roasting, melting, mixing,<br />
dissolving, extracting, pumping, decanting, centrifuging,<br />
filtering (by gravity, pressure, suction, plate and frame, and leaf<br />
filters), evaporating under pressure or vacuum, fractionating,<br />
condensing, crystallizing, drying under pressure or vacuum, and<br />
absorbing gases and vapors.<br />
LABORATORY OF STEAM ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING RESEARCH<br />
Through funds provided in part by the late Dr. Norman<br />
Bridge, and in part from other sources, the <strong>Institute</strong> has erected<br />
an engineering building, designed by thc Bertram G. Goodhue<br />
A.ssociates, 50 by 140 feet in size. One section <strong>of</strong> this is occupied<br />
by a new steam engineering laboratory, which contains a<br />
steam unit consisting <strong>of</strong> two Babcock and Wilcox Sterling boilers,<br />
each <strong>of</strong> SOo H.P. capacity, with all accessory equipment to provide<br />
for comprehensive tests <strong>of</strong> all portions <strong>of</strong> the installation.<br />
The other half <strong>of</strong> the building is devoted to an engineering<br />
research laboratory, in which the research section <strong>of</strong> chemic&!<br />
engineering has already been installed.
