thoroughness for positions as constructing, designing, operating,<br />
and managing engineers.<br />
(4) The four-year Undergraduate Course in Science shall<br />
afford, even more fully than is possible in the Engineering<br />
Course, an intensive training in physics, chemistry, and mathematics.<br />
In its third and fourth years groups <strong>of</strong> optional studies<br />
shall be included which will permit either some measure <strong>of</strong><br />
specialization in one <strong>of</strong> these basic sciences or in geology, paleontology,<br />
biology, or in the various branches <strong>of</strong> engineering. This<br />
Course shall include the same cultural studies as does the Engineering<br />
Course, and in addition, instruction in the German and<br />
French languages. Its purpose will be to provide a collegiate<br />
education which, when followed by one or more years <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />
study, will best train the creative type <strong>of</strong> scientist or engineer<br />
so urgently needed in our educational, governmental, and industrial<br />
development, and which will most effectively fit able students<br />
for positions in the research and development departments<br />
<strong>of</strong> manufacturing and transportation enterprises.<br />
(5) Fifth-year Courses leading to the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong><br />
Science shall be <strong>of</strong>fered in the sciences, especially in physics,<br />
mathematics, chemistry, geology, paleontology, and biology. A<br />
considerable proportion <strong>of</strong> the time <strong>of</strong> these Courses shall be<br />
devoted to research. These will be supplementary to the Undergraduate<br />
Course in Science, and will be intended to continue the<br />
training for the types <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional positions referred to in the<br />
preceding paragraph.<br />
(6) Throughout the period <strong>of</strong> undergraduate study every<br />
effort shall be made to develop the character, ideals, breadth <strong>of</strong><br />
view, general culture, and physical well-being <strong>of</strong> the students<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>. To this end the literary, historical, economic,<br />
and general scientific subjects shall continue to be taught by a<br />
permanent staff <strong>of</strong> men <strong>of</strong> mature judgment and broad experience;<br />
