A selective study <strong>of</strong> English literature from the beginnings to the end<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 19th century, focused on the most distinguished works <strong>of</strong> the<br />
greater writers in poetry, drama, the novel, and the essay. Special attention<br />
is given to the social background <strong>of</strong> the works assigned for<br />
reading, and to the chief cultural movements <strong>of</strong> the modern world. In<br />
the first term the emphasis is placed on Shakespeare and the English<br />
Renaissance; in the second term on the life and literature <strong>of</strong> the 18th<br />
century; in the third on the Victorian Era.<br />

novel, the short story, drama, and poetry.<br />
