For the study <strong>of</strong> biology, the <strong>Institute</strong> provides the following<br />

opportunities:<br />

A new option in biology has been introduced into the four-yel;lr<br />

undergraduate Course in Science. This option will include those<br />

fundamental biological subjects that are an essential preparation<br />

for work in any special field <strong>of</strong> pure or applied biology. This<br />

three-year course will afford a far more thorough training in the<br />

basic sciences <strong>of</strong> physics, chemistry, and mathematics than students<br />

<strong>of</strong> biology, medicine, or agriculture commonly receive.<br />

Special opportunities will also be <strong>of</strong>fered for the pursuit <strong>of</strong> more<br />

advanced courses and extended researches leading to the degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE SUBJECTS<br />

Bi. 1. ELEMENTARY BIOLOGY. 9 units (3-3-3); second term.<br />

An introductory course intended to give the student <strong>of</strong> general<br />

science some information about the fundamental properties <strong>of</strong> living<br />

things. .<br />

Bi. 2. COMPARATIVE PHYSIOLOGY AND ANATOMY. 9 units (3-4-2); third<br />

term.<br />

An introductory course for students expecting to elect the biological<br />

group. The course will include a brief survey <strong>of</strong> the animal kingdom,<br />

with dissection <strong>of</strong> reprcsentatives <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the chief groups.<br />

Bi. 3. GENERAL BOTANY. 9 units (3-4-2); first term.<br />

A course in the structure and physiology <strong>of</strong> plants.<br />

Bi. 4. HISTOLOGICAL TECHNIQUE. 6 units (0-6-0); first term.<br />

A laboratory course in the preparation <strong>of</strong> materials for studies on<br />

cells and tissues.
