Ge. 9. STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY. 8 units (3-0-5); third term.<br />

Prerequisite: Ge. 7 a.<br />

A consideration <strong>of</strong> the structural features <strong>of</strong> the Earth's crlUit;<br />

joints, folds, faults, foliation. Computation <strong>of</strong> thicknesses and depths.<br />

Determination <strong>of</strong> the nature and amount <strong>of</strong> displacements on faults by<br />

use <strong>of</strong> descriptive geometry.<br />

Instructor: Buwalda.<br />

Ge. 11 a, b. INVERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY. 10 units first term, 8<br />

units second term.<br />

Prerequisites: Ge. 1 a, b, c.<br />

Morphology and geologie history <strong>of</strong> the common groups <strong>of</strong> fossil<br />

invertebrates, with emphasis on progressive changes in structures and<br />

their significance in evolution and in adaptive modifications. Laboratory,<br />

conferences, lectures, and occasional field trips.<br />

Ge. Hl a, b. VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY. 10 units (:2-6-:2) second<br />

term; 8 units third term.<br />

Prerequisite: Ge. 1 b.<br />

Osteology, affinities, and history <strong>of</strong> the principal groups <strong>of</strong> fossil<br />

mammals and reptiles. History <strong>of</strong> vertebrate life with special reference<br />

to the region <strong>of</strong> western North America.<br />

Ge.:2l. THESIS PROBLEM IN GEOLOGY. 8 units; second and third<br />

terms.<br />

Prerequisite: Ge. 7 a.<br />

The student investigates a limited geologic problem, preferably <strong>of</strong><br />

his own choosing, under direction, in the field or laboratory. Individual<br />

initiative is developed, principles <strong>of</strong> research are acquired, and practice<br />

gained in technical methods. The student prepares a thesis setting forth<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> the research and their meaning.<br />
