pursue advanced study and research for not less than six terms,<br />

or approximately two years (counting each summer <strong>of</strong> field work<br />

as a term), before they will be recommended by the Division <strong>of</strong><br />

Geology and Paleontology for the final examination for the Doctor's<br />

degree.<br />

IX. GRADUATE LIFE<br />

The Atheneum, now under construction, will be readj for occupancy<br />

in September, 1930. (See page 60.) It will afford opportunity<br />

for contact between the Associates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>, distinguished<br />

foreign visitors, and members <strong>of</strong> the staffs and<br />

graduate students at the three adj acent institutions, the Mount<br />

Wilson observatory, the Huntington Library, and the <strong>California</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong>. It will also provide living quarters for a limited number<br />

<strong>of</strong> men associated with the foregoing institutions.<br />

X. FELLOWSHIPS AND ASSISTANTSHIPS<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a number <strong>of</strong> Fellowships and Assistantships,<br />

carrying salaries ranging from $500 to $1,000 for ten<br />

months' service. (The tuition <strong>of</strong> such fellows and assistants is<br />

$180 until admitted to candidacy for the Doctor's degree, when<br />

it becomes $90.)<br />

The primary object <strong>of</strong> these appointments is to give a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> well-qualified men a training in research which will prepare<br />

them for university teaching and research and for the many<br />

important positions in scientific and industrial research laboratories<br />

and in development departments <strong>of</strong> American industries.<br />

Teaching fellows will devote not more than fifteen hours a<br />

week to instruction <strong>of</strong> a character that will afford them useful<br />

experience. This time includes that required in preparation and<br />

in marking note-books and papers, as well as that spent in classroom<br />

and laboratory. Of the remaining time at least one-half<br />

must be devoted to research; and the obligation to prosecute this<br />

earnestly is regarded as no less binding than that <strong>of</strong> showing<br />

proper interest in teaching. Advanced courses <strong>of</strong> study may also<br />

be pursued as far as time permits.<br />
