INFORMATION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS Il5<br />

Modern Algebra, Ma. 123 a, b, c, including the Galois Theory;<br />

Algebraic Gcometry, Ma. 109 a, b, c, including Metric Differential<br />

Geometry and Tensor Analysis; Theory <strong>of</strong> Functions <strong>of</strong> Real<br />

and Complex Variables; anyone <strong>of</strong> the courses, other than the<br />

purely mathematical, listed under 1, b, preferably Ph. 15 a, b, c,<br />

or Ph. 8 a, b, c.<br />

b. To be recommended for candidacy for the Doctor's degree<br />

in Physics the applicant must pass the following courses with a<br />

grade <strong>of</strong> 5l or better: Analytical Mechanics, Ph. 15l a, b, c,<br />

Electricity and Magnetism, Ph. 8 a, b, c, Physical Optics, Ph. 5l5l<br />

a, b, c, and Introduction to Mathematical Physics, Ph. 15 a, b, c.<br />

In case the applicant is minoring in Mathematics he must also<br />

pass with a grade <strong>of</strong> 5l or better the following courses: Advanced<br />

Calculus, Ma. 8 a, b, and Differential Equations, Ma. 11. In<br />

case the applicant is minoring in Chemistry he must also pass<br />

with a grade <strong>of</strong> 5l or better: Chemical Principles, Ch. 511 a, b, c.<br />

c. To be recommended for candidacy for the Doctor's degree<br />

in Electrical Engineering the applicant must pass the following<br />

courses with a grade <strong>of</strong> 5l or better: Analytical Mechanics, Ph.<br />

15l, a, b, c, or Applied Mechanics, AM. 1 a, b, and Strength <strong>of</strong><br />

Materials, AM. 1 c; Electricity and Magnetism, Ph. 8 a, b, c, or<br />

Electricity and Magnetism, Ph. 7 a, b, and Theory <strong>of</strong> Electricity<br />

and Magnetism, Ph. 15l5l; Advanced Calculus, Ma. 8 a, b,<br />

and Differential Equations, Ma. 11; Alternating Current Analysis,<br />

EE. 5l0; Induction Machinery, EE. 5l5l; Transmission Lines,<br />

EE. 44; Dielectrics, EE. 55l.<br />

5l. An applicant may also satisfy the requirement by taking<br />

an examination in the subject with the instructor in charge.<br />

Students are advised to satisfy the conditions for admission<br />

to candidacy in their respective departments as rapidly as possible.<br />

In general at least one-half <strong>of</strong> the requirements should<br />

be met by the end <strong>of</strong> the first year <strong>of</strong> graduate work. Failure
