cility, who has shown ability in carrying on research and whose<br />

research subject has been approved by the chairman <strong>of</strong> the division<br />

concerned, and whose program <strong>of</strong> study has been approved<br />

by both his major and minor departments may on recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the chairman <strong>of</strong> the division in which he is working be<br />

admitted by the Committee on Graduate Study to candidacy for<br />

the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy.<br />

Examinations in French and German, prerequisite to admission<br />

to candidacy for the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy, will<br />

be given on the fourth Friday <strong>of</strong> September and on the first<br />

Friday <strong>of</strong> December. Students expecting to file application for<br />

candidacy in December are advised to take the September examination,<br />

so that, if they have had inadequate preparation, they<br />

may enroll for the fall term in one <strong>of</strong> the regular language<br />

classes <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>. Students having taken regular language<br />

classes in the <strong>Institute</strong>, and having passed the examinations, may<br />

be exempted from further requirement. Graduate students may,<br />

in lieu <strong>of</strong> the examinations <strong>of</strong>fered in September or December,<br />

take the regular final examinations given at the end <strong>of</strong> anyone<br />

<strong>of</strong> the three terms.<br />

A regular blank is provided for making application for admission<br />

to candidacy. This blank may be obtained from the chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Committee on Graduate Study, and the application<br />

must be on file in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Registrar before the close <strong>of</strong><br />

the first term <strong>of</strong> the year in which the degree is to be conferred.<br />

The student himself is responsible for seeing that admission is<br />

secured at the proper time.<br />

(c) Examinations: A final examination is required <strong>of</strong> all<br />

candidates for the Doctor's degree. This examination, subject<br />

to the approval <strong>of</strong> the Committee on Graduate Study, may be<br />

taken at such time after admission to candidacy as the candidate<br />

is prepared, except that it must take place at least two weeks<br />

before the degree is to be conferred. The examination may be<br />

written or oral or both, and may be divided in parts or given all<br />

at one time at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the departments concerned.
