trar, and must be submitted not later than the end <strong>of</strong> the first<br />
week <strong>of</strong> the first term <strong>of</strong> the year in which the degree is to be<br />
granted.<br />
All programs <strong>of</strong> study, and applications for candidacy for the<br />
degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Science, shall be in charge <strong>of</strong> the Committee<br />
on Courses in Science (in case the advanced work is to be in<br />
Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Geology,<br />
Paleontology, or Biology), and <strong>of</strong> the Committee on the<br />
Courses in Engineering (in case the work is to be in Civil,<br />
Mechanical, Electrical, or Aeronautical Engineering); and recommendations<br />
to the Faculty <strong>of</strong> the award <strong>of</strong> that degree shall<br />
be made by one <strong>of</strong> these Committees; all such actions being taken<br />
in general after consideration and recommendation by the Department<br />
concerned.<br />
B. <strong>DOC</strong>TOR OF PHILOSOPHY<br />
1. General Requirements: The degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />
is conferred by the <strong>Institute</strong> in recognition <strong>of</strong> breadth <strong>of</strong><br />
scientific attainment and <strong>of</strong> power to investigate scientific problems<br />
independently and efficiently as exhibited by the canaidate<br />
during his period <strong>of</strong> graduate work. While the degree is not<br />
awarded for the completion <strong>of</strong> definite courses <strong>of</strong> study continued<br />
through a stated term <strong>of</strong> residence, the advanced study<br />
and research must in general be pur sue d for at least three<br />
academic years. Advanced work done at other institutions will<br />
be given due credit, but not less than one year must be spent in<br />
residence at the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
The work for the degree must consist <strong>of</strong> scientific research<br />
and the preparation <strong>of</strong> a thesis describing it and <strong>of</strong> systematic<br />
studies <strong>of</strong> an advanced character in some branch <strong>of</strong> science or<br />
engineering, which will be termed the "major subject" <strong>of</strong> the<br />
candidate. In addition as "minor subj ect" (or subj ects) studies<br />
such as will give a fundamental knowledge and research point<strong>of</strong>-view<br />
must be pursued in at least one other branch <strong>of</strong> science<br />
