V. REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHER DEGREES<br />
. The <strong>Institute</strong> gives two higher degrees, the degree <strong>of</strong> Master<br />
<strong>of</strong> Science, and the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy.<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the permanent <strong>Institute</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> rank higher than<br />
that <strong>of</strong> Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor are not admitted to candidacy for a<br />
higher degree.<br />
The course <strong>of</strong> study <strong>of</strong> each candidate will be in charge <strong>of</strong><br />
the department in which the student is pursuing his major work,<br />
which will exercise general oversight over his work.<br />
Each student should consult his departmental adviser, concerning<br />
special divisional and departmental requirements. See<br />
Section VI for special requirements for the Doctor's degree in<br />
Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering, Section VII<br />
for special requirements in Chemistry, and Section VIII for<br />
special requirements in Geology.<br />
A. MASTER OF SCIENCE<br />
To receive the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Science, the student must<br />
complete in a satisfactory way the work indicated in the schedule<br />
<strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the Fifth-Year Courses, as well as in the schedule <strong>of</strong><br />
the Four-Year Course in Science or in Engineering (see pages<br />
138-139, 143-146), except that in the case <strong>of</strong> students transferring<br />
from other institutions equivalents will be accepted in subjects<br />
in which the student shows by examination or otherwise<br />
that he is pr<strong>of</strong>icient, and except in so far as substitutions may be<br />
approved by special vote <strong>of</strong> the Committee in charge.<br />
A student before entering upon work for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master<br />
<strong>of</strong> Science should, after consultation with the department concerned,<br />
submit a plan <strong>of</strong> study (together with his previous record<br />
if he transfers from another institution), and make application<br />
to the Committee in charge for acceptance as a candidate for<br />
