their studies will be allowed to register for not more than 60<br />

units in anyone term. Students on part time teaching appointments<br />

will not be allowed to register for so many units. Teaching<br />

fellows will be allowed to register for not more than 45 units.<br />

9. Research Associates, National Research Fellows, Travelling<br />

Fellows from other institutions, and other guests <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> are requested to file a card in the Registrar's <strong>of</strong>fice at<br />

the beginning <strong>of</strong> their work, giving <strong>Institute</strong> and home address,<br />

degrees, nature <strong>of</strong> work planned, etc.<br />

IV. EXAMINATIONS AND GRADES<br />

1. Term examinations are held in all graduate courses unless<br />

the instructor shall, after consultation with the chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

division, arrange otherwise. No student taking a course for<br />

credit shall be exempt from these examinations when held.<br />

2. Grades for all graduate work are turned in to the Registrar's<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice at the close <strong>of</strong> each term.<br />

s. The following system <strong>of</strong> grades is used to indicate class<br />

standing in graduate courses: 4 denotes marked distinction, 3<br />

denotes above average, 2 denotes average, 1 denotes below<br />

average, C denotes conditioned, F denotes failed. In addition<br />

to these grades which are to be interpreted as having the same<br />

significance as for undergraduate courses, the grade P, which<br />

denotes passed, may be used at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the instructor,<br />

in the case <strong>of</strong> seminar, research, or other work which does not<br />

lend itself to more specific grading. In the case <strong>of</strong> students who<br />

are planning to take a Master's degree and <strong>of</strong> undergraduates,<br />

when allowed to carry graduate work, specific grades are required.<br />

The same scholastic requirements apply to students who expect<br />

to receive a Master's degree as are in force for undergraduates.<br />

4. The Master's degree is awarded with the designation "with<br />

honor," or without designation.<br />

5. The Doctor's degree is awarded with the designations
