Selection PhaseIntroductionObjectiveThe automation project of a process factory (water treatment, mines, refinery, cementfactory…) deals with sensors and actuators characterized by:• Their type• Their number• Their complexity. They are integrated in an architecture which will ensures the control and treatment ofgenerated measurements. The choice of this architecture depends upon two kinds ofconstraints:• Functional constraints which determine the quality of the services to offer and theperformance level required.• Operational constraints which determine the installation’s physical characteristicsand environmental requirements.Principles of Architecture ConstructionWith these constraints taken into account, the architecture of the instrumentation bussystem is built in two stages:The first stage consists of defining the key components of the network:• Choice of the bus master• Choice of the cabling system• Choice of a centralized or distributed network topology. The second stage is the choice of one of the three architectures recommended bySchneider Electric. Please note that these architectures are based on the Quantum or Premiumplatforms. However, an architecture for the M340 platform may also be designedusing the information supplied.7
