Management ToolsTo simplify the configuration and use of the components and to make themtransparent to the user (Plug and Play), the PROFIBUS standards define a set oftools, usable by designers and automation programmers.GSD filesGSD (General Specification Database) file list the characteristics of the components,and comprise three parts:General specifications such as the name of the supplier, the productdesignation, flows, and intervals of monitoring.Reserved specifications for the master equipment, such as the maximumnumber of stopovers or the possibility of remote loading.Specifications containing all the characteristics of the slaves, such as thevarious methods of I/O, the definition of the diagnostic messages, anddescription of the components.EDD FilesEDD (Electronic Device Description) files list all of the properties of the componentsof PROFIBUS. They are provided by the manufacturer for use by the developmenttools. EDD files comprise two parts:-A description of the variables and functions of the apparatus-Precise details on its visualization and use.Remark: EDD are not used in our architecturesFDT-DTMThe FDT (Fieldbus Device Tool) is based on the COM/DCOM (Component ObjectModel) originally developed by Microsoft. It provides a means of manufacturerindependent access to component characteristics, allowing their configuration,development and diagnosis. All parameters and options for a component are placedby the manufacturer in a DTM (Device Type Manager), of which GSD and EDD filesform an integral part.22
