Profibus Device TypesProfibus devices can be classified into three categories:• DP master class 1 (DPM1) is a central controller that cyclically exchangesinformation with the distributed stations (slaves) at a specified message cycle.Typical DPM1 devices are PLCs. A DPM1 has active bus access with which itcan read measurement data (inputs) of the field devices and write the setpointvalues (outputs) of the actuators at fixed times. This continuously repeating cycleis the basis of the automation function.• DP master class 2 (DPM2) are engineering, configuration or operating devices.They are implemented during commissioning and are used for maintenance anddiagnostics, to configure connected devices, to evaluate measured values andparameters, and to request device status. A DPM2 does not have to bepermanently connected to the bus system. A DPM2 also has active bus access.• Slaves are peripherals (I/O devices, drives, HMIs, valves, transducers, analyzers)that read in process information and/or use output information to intervene in aprocess. Slaves are passive communication devices that respond only to directqueries.Profibus PA Transmission TechnologyProfibus PA uses the physical layer defined in ANSI/ISA-50.02, Part 2-1992, which isthe same as IEC 61158-2. this defines MBP ( Manchester-encoded , Bus powered)as the transmission technology used to satisfy all process automation requirementswith a defined transmission rate of 31.25 Kbit/s.Up to 32 stations per segment can be connected with Profibus PA20
Connection of Profibus DP and PAMost Profibus control hosts cannot accept Profibus PA inputs directly. A linkingdevice or a segment coupler is needed to convert the Profibus PA protocol to theProfibus DP protocol. (The host can accept only Profibus DP.) Linking device andsegment couplers are described below:Profibus DPPLCI/OCouplersProfibus PALinking device: Most linking devices can only pass information contained in thestandard Profibus PA device profiles. As a result the host does not have access tovendor-specific device information.Segment coupler: A segment coupler converts the physical layer between ProfibusPA and Profibus DP. It has no knowledge of the message content.These differences present the user with an architectural choice when considering theimplementation of Profibus PA:• Higher data throughput by using a linking device and fewer DP interfaces, or• Lower communications throughput and higher bus cost by using the segmentcoupler and more DP buses to connect PA to the host.21
